MAGIC
Only the Elite are allowed to possess magic. Magic in this country is derived from a precious metal mined in the northern regions of Yggandro known as Shallow. Any jewelry, attire, weapon, or even any item in general that is created with this precious metal will grant the user magic of a single element. The element is determined based on the individual themselves - the metal is almost sentient in that it derives characteristics from the wearer to determine the element they are designated with. This element stick with the individual their whole lives. Although the Elite are the ones who control the distribution of the shallow, the Inferior can also derive magic from the metal. They would have to steal an item from the Elite, though, and that could get them in some HUGE SHIT.
CLASS/WEALTH DIFFERENCES + GOV'T/POWER
There are only two classes in Yggandro. The Elite and the Inferior. These are obviously names that the Elite came up with, but the Inferior have no choice in the matter of what they are called as the Elite control the power and the wealth of the nation. They have a master - servant relationship. Any Elite can order around any Inferior, unless they are collared and owned by another member of the Elite, as many Inferiors are forced into slave auctions bi-annually. Their statuses are known at all times by the clothing they wear and foreigners visiting must temporarily hand their attire over to border patrol in exchange for visitors attire colours to know that the Elite nor the Inferior are allowed to mess with them.
The Elite are wealthy and in total control of the population of Yggandro. For every 1 Elite there are at least 10 Inferior. Being an Elite means you were either born into an Elite family or you were deemed worthy via the Annual Ordeal (explained below). All Elites must wear bright colours or white to prove their status and these clothes are distributed by the Elite Office. Nothing an Elite does is against the law, unless it is against another Elite.
The Inferior are the exact opposite of the Elite. Some are slaves, some are paid workers by the kinder Elite, and some simply mind their own businesses as much as possible. They are taxed heavily and are usually quite poor. Their clothes are dark, usually black. Most of them work off the coast, selling penguin and seal meat - but there are, of course, tailors, bakers, smitheries, etc where the Inferiors work, as the Elite only work if they wish to. Some are complete slaves to the Elite, as those who are not careful during the months of February and November can be caught be the Elite and sold off in one of the two slave auctions they have during the year. These Inferior are collared and must obey everything their master Elite tells them; even if they decide to struggle. They cannot win. Their only freedom from there comes if they decide to go through the Annual Ordeal.
The Annual Ordeal is an Inferior’s shot of becoming an Elite. Every year ten Inferiors are granted the promotion of becoming an Elite, and thus have access to the Elite fund and other perks. Hundreds of Inferiors are pitted against each other in physical and mental battles - fighting each other and facing psychological challenges. The top ten scoring Inferiors are granted the opportunity to enter the world of the Elite. The Elite find a lot of entertainment out of sitting in the stadium where the challenges are held and watching the Inferior turn on each other for a shot of wealth and status.
HISTORY
Yggandro's original history is long since lost to those whom reside in the nation. This is thanks to the Elite, whom have, over time, have completely rewritten any academic record of the nation's original history. The textbooks make reference to the Elite entering the nation and saving the it from a barbaric ruler 2000 years ago. All academic texts contain blatant propaganda in an attempt to keep the Inferior in order and to back up their own reasons for being in charge. A few of the Inferior know the real history of the nation, as their relatives have passed down the accurate knowledge from word of mouth, but those individuals are far and few between. People do not generally believe their stories about an evil cult slowly obtaining power through brainwashing, magic, and murder.
PRIMARY IMPORT/EXPORT
Yggandro features a strong industry of fisherman, particularly crab and lobster. However, their metal mining industry is even stronger. The nation requires a lot of metal to foster their system of magic but they still have plenty of exports left over. They tend to ship off more weapons than actual crude metal.
On the other hand, Yggandro requires to import a lot of livestock meat and crops, as their land is not suitable for regular farming.
LANDMARKS
The Elite Hall
This is where the top members of the Elite live and conduct business. Even other Elites are rarely allowed into this building. The only exception to this is directly after the Annual Ordeal - for this is where the winning Inferior are initiated into the Elite. As such, most Elite only enter this building once in their life time. There are strange rumours about this site being haunted, as well as being the place where curses are created. A few individuals report seeing Inferiors enter the Elite Hall only to exit with completely different personalities. It's a mysterious and intimidating building.
The Ordeal Arena
While this arena is known as the Ordeal Arena it is only named that due to the importance and fame of the Annual Ordeal itself. Sure, the Annual Ordeal does, indeed, take place on this coast-side arena, but other leisurely events also take place here. The Inferior are allowed to play in the Arena, as it serves as entertainment for the Elite. It is one of the places that the Inferior hold dear to them, as they are allowed to play there.
TECHNOLOGY
All technology worth speaking about is derived from shallow metal. The Elite whom live day to day in accompaniment with the shallow magic and constructs live a decently carefree life. The shallow magic can be used for basic electricity, heating, and even communication. However, they lack the more complicated electronical devices such as computers. The most extensive they can get is a cellphone-like device for communication purposes; including both talk and text. The healthcare technology in Yggandro is marvelous and any injured or sick Elite will most likely be cured.
Stepping into the zone of the Inferiors seems like almost taking a step into the past by a few hundred years. Everything they have is forged by their own hands.
MILITARY
There is not a general need for a military. The police in Yggandro are all Elites whom have volunteered for the job, simply because they enjoy beating down the Inferior. Whenever there is external conflict the Elites simply send out the Inferior to die in their stead until victory is achieved - promising the Inferior rewards for the victory of Yggandro, most Inferior being so desperate for something more than what they have that they comply without much protest. However, external conflict does not often happen.
QUALITY OF LIVING

INFRASTRUCTURE
The Elite love to build modern, white buildings. The Elite areas are loaded with stark white buildings - the only exception being the Arena which boasts mostly white but has some darker accents due to it being on the border between the Elite and the Inerior living quarters. The Inferior live in slums and the infrastructure is weak. Most houses and buildings are created out of whatever wood they can find or personally trade from the lumber merchant wagons. Sometimes there will be some decent looking houses as some Inferiors have trained in carpentry and have gotten lucky by trading away lobster and crab hauls for lumber.
