folly

Coming home from a day's work, Ezekiel couldn't wait to relax in the place he called home. With the steps he took, a yawn would escape his mouth. Inside his mind, he just couldn't wait to shower and sit back on the couch for a while, maybe taking a little nap before taking care of dinner. He was in charge of the family meals, but he knew that neither his husband nor his son would be back so soon, so he would have time for himself.

As he arrived at his front steps, he rummaged through his pockets for the house keys. From texture alone, he figured his hand had been in touch with his other belongings he kept there: spare change from the snack he had along the way, receipt for said snack, a candy he kept to give out to others, a button in case he needed to sew one somewhere, cat food he bought in case he saw a stray, ...and the list went on. To be honest, he would be standing there all night if he had to describe every possession he brought with him.

His hands stopped when he felt something familiar--so he took it out of his pocket to confirm it with his own eye. It was a wooden figurine Mika had given him as a token; a charm for his beloved husband (he actually had plenty of those, but always made sure to carry one or two at all times).

He gently smiled at the small item he held, his face practically gleaming at the thought of his husband. He then made a tiny gasp, realizing he had gotten distracted. He was searching for his keys!

His hands went back into frantically rummaging every pocket he had, this time determined to find those keys. Unfortunately, his attempts proved to have been in vain as he still failed to find the small pieces of metal in the end. He sighed and figured that perhaps he should call Mika to ask when he would be home, unsure whether he had left the keys or lost them somewhere altogether.

He was about to reach back into his pocket to make the call when he made another shocking realization to himself,

"Ah."

The phone wasn't in his pocket either. He remembered the things he had inside his pockets he had just rummaged through, and he was sure the mobile gadget wasn't among those items.

With that dealing the final blow, he sank down. Both figuratively and literally.

If someone walked by that moment, one could see that Ezekiel's soul may have departed from his body a little.

He shook his head, trying to get a grip on himself. It then hit him that he had left both his keys and phone on his table back at work earlier today.

I'm the biggest fool ever alive.

He bitterly thought to himself, sighing in defeat. Finally, he reluctantly made his way back to the police station with a dejected look.
