- Good night, lady Tetia.
The maid bowed and left, closing the door. The young noble sat on the sheets in the dark, looking through tall thin windows at the shimmering stars in the night sky.
She barely left the opulent mansion that was her family residence, but she has read so much, heard so much, seen so much of the outside that the prospect of being locked in forever after her official introduction to the court - which was supposed to be tomorrow - suffocated her.
Counting five minutes, Tetia slipped out of the bed and took out a set of warm clothes from a secret stash behind her wardrobe. It was crude and simple, hand-made by her, a seventh set after the previous six were found and confiscated. Through experience she managed to put together a better patchwork every time and gather better materials here and there, and this coat was really good at staving off cold.

This wasn't Tetia's first escape attempt. The guards would usually catch her somewhere in the city, or countryside if she's lucky, all too familiar with her long silver hair. Sometimes she would chicken out in the garden and just spend the night in the rose bushes, looking at her own cold breath, because even that felt better than the cold inside the tall stone walls. Today she hid behind the bushes, maneuvering around the night patrol. They weren't about to stop her. The only way to truly escape would be to cross the border, so that was the goal.

When she got to her usual sneaking place, a tiny crack in the garden wall just big enough for her to slip through, she was in for a nasty surprise - it was fixed. Tetia almost regarded the crack as something of an old, reliable friend through the years, a little miracle of hers. Seeing it gone was not a good sign. The only other venues of escape were the gates, which have guards all over them, or scaling a flat wall four times her height - she would never make it up fast enough to not get caught even if there were enough footholds...

The night sky was clear, and the stars shone bright as the girl looked up, clenching her fists.

I just want to be free.

Tetia floated up in the air, not making a sound, holding her breath as an unseen force carried her over the wall. It let go a bit above the ground, leaving her tumbling in the snow. In her hand now was a glittering teal sphere.
The girl stared at it for a minute, blinking, then hurried back on her feet and jumped.

The wind carried her over hills and rivers, and once she was far enough, Tetia finally laughed, echoing sound the last thing she left behind.
