Chapter 1

Briar is in a DTA by In-Town on scratch! Credit to them <3

Briar glanced back- breathing heavily. The night was dark, and stars glittered coldly. The moon wouldn’t show through the clouds- but she could still see it’s glare. She looked back at the shadows, and saw nothing. She gave a wary glance, then bounded away.

Bark littered the floor of her den, covered with moss. Briar tried multiple times to get comfy in it, but she’d woken up from her bad dream and couldn’t  doze off again- so she got up and stretched. The she-cat glanced fondly at her small plants- lined against the wall. She always brought bark with water on them daily to keep them hydrated.  She knew their names by heart now. The one on the right was yarrow- the middle was yucca, and the left was heather. Briar curled up to them- and she fell asleep to their soft whispering and gentle aroma.

Briar woke up. The skies were clearing and the brisk breeze snatched up her fur. She shook her sleep out- and went to get bark. She found a suitable piece, and padded over to a puddle. The water trickled onto the bark and she withdrew her head, being careful not the spill any. Gently, she poured the water onto the plants, they shook in the wind. The she-cat patted them tenderly, and went to take her bark out. A cat with glasses, a scarf, and lots of freckles stepped out of the bushes, and Briar jumped. “ Hi!“ the cat said happily, “It’s super nice to meet you! I’ve been sent out to ask cats if they wanted to join the gardening centre. We don’t have many recruits right now- and we need more people to look after the plants.“ A note of desperation entered her bubbly voice, “The plants are dying, and we really need people.”

Briar couldn’t believe it. She had wanted this her whole life. She was going to be able to work in a gardening centre! She bounded away, and called to the cat, “I’ll be right back!” Briar scooped up her plants, and carried them to the cat. “Let’s go,” announced the cat,” I’m Steph, by the way.“

Briar lived in the gardening centre her whole life- and she and Steph became huge friends. Briar‘s plants grew large, and she still watered them, even when she was very elderly. She loved her work- and was devoted to it.
