Ever since their first meeting, Shadestar knew they were going to be enemies. Shadestar- or Shadepaw as she was at the time- was on her first hunt with her mentor along side her 'partner', Swanpaw and her mentor. She still thought it was a stupid idea for apprentices to have a 'buddy' to 'bond' with during their apprenticeship. As they padded through the thick brush and foliage of the hunting grounds, Shadepaw heard the distant crunching of leaves as an animal hopped afar. Her mentor nor other party members were paying attention, she knew she had to catch it. This was her chance to prove herself.

She silently crept along, following the sounds of her prey until she spotted the small squirrel. She crouched down, slowly and carefully making her way towards it. Just as she was ready to pounce another cat jumped from the left, spooking the animal. Shadepaw growled angrily at the intruder, Swanpaw in her idiotic glory.

“You idiot!”, she hissed, “You made me lose my hunt!”

Swanpaw had the gull to act surprised, like she hadn’t just seen the squirrel scurry away. It only made Shadepaw’s blood boil hotter. The two may be the same age, but Shadestar always made it clear she was to be left alone as a kit. She’d avoided others as much as she could, but it seems now that they’re apprentices this may be harder than before. It made her want to scratch a two-leg or what ever god cursed her with this idiot.

“I’m sorry”, she replied sheepishly, “I didn’t know you were hunting something. I was just worried you got lost or something…”

How dare this girl act like she cares about her. Her own parents didn’t care this much, how could she actually care for her wellbeing? Or maybe it’s just pity.

“I don’t need your pity”, she snapped, “I’m fine out here. Just leave me alone.”

Swanpaw froze for a moment, searching her face as if to find a lie. She most likely did, but she left her alone all the same. Shadepaw sighed as she watched her bound off. This was going to be a hard partnership.
