Chapter 1

Wandering the forest, Avery searched the flora for edible berries since he'd run out of food for the week. Something about the season of winter made him feel more lonely than ever. It was when the trees lost their colorful leaves, all the birds and squirrels were out of sight, and nothing was present except the bitter cold. However, the leaves were just changing color. It was currently fall, the season of gathering food and finding shelter for the coming months. Avery never had a big problem using his shack as a shelter all his life. Sometimes it would leak and parts of it would collapse, but that could always be fixed somehow. He really dreamed of seeing the much bigger world; the city.

He wanted to see it up close and walk among the people- see what it was like to be part of a society. But most importantly, Avery adored the skyscrapers. Some of the ones he's seen reach so high, he couldn't see the top, and liked to imagine they were higher than the clouds. He couldn't even fathom what it'd be like to view the world from way up there. Avery had been on the ground all his life- his hooves had never touched cement or a hardwood floor. The only things holding him from running wild into that new world were the humans themselves. The first time, he was naive. It caused him scars that never went away and shamed him beyond words. But he was adamant, and hadn't given up on the city. Nearly everyday, he perches himself up on a tree, as high as he can climb, and watches the bustling city from afar. The civilians walking left and right looked like little ants from that distance. However, thanks to his highly developed faun ears, he can hear from quite far away. Sometimes he can even hear every word a specific person is saying.

That said, hearing is undoubtedly Avery's strongest sense. He doesn't have the circular ears of a human, but instead the ears of a deer on either side of his head, covered in black fur. They are fully functional and able to move around just like that of a deer's. This is the only feature that distinguishes his own face from a person's. Besides his ears and legs, Avery has a totally human appearance. This is due to him having human/deer and human/goat ancestry.

When his mother, a faun, married his father, a satyr, they created a hybrid between the three species. He could even be considered a new species; the first of his kind. Both his parents had the legs of a deer and a goat. Avery possesses the legs of a deer, mixed with the black fur of a goat. His muscular frame is a trait from his dad. It's unknown where his long striped tail may have come from, but his parents believed it was simply a mutation. His tail is thick with a furry tuft at the tip like a lion's, and three dark grey stripes growing in volume toward it. He even has small goat horns hidden underneath all his curly hair. Avery is still a growing boy, so soon enough his horns would grow too big to hide. Of course, he didn't like this fact and wished he could just cut them away somehow, but he knew doing that would prove to be quite painful.

In addition, Avery has inherited his parents' attitudes and morals. His mother, who was born in the forest, was like the peacekeeper of nature and loved to care for all living things. While his father, who was born in Hades, was often violent and cold at heart. Half of his mother's and half of his father's personalities mixed, but Avery's kind side is the side that shows the most. The other side is still there, only hidden deep down. This proves that his mother's traits are dominant over his father's, hence why he's so polite. When his heart rate increases as a result of getting either nervous or angry, his eyes change from a calm brown color to a burning orange hue. His father had eyes the same color, and this is a small example of his inner side, or "demon," coming out. Avery himself doesn't know much about it, and isn't aware of his strange eye color as he's never had someone around to tell him. His outbursts never gave him many problems since he's isolated from any society, but he often broke things because of his wild strength. But Avery can do nothing about it. He's had to come to the term that it will only get worse in the future.

As the sun went down, he decided he'd gathered up a good amount of berries and headed back home. When he got back, he noticed the flora around the shack was growing a little out of hand. The vines and tall grass were almost too dense to see through. Berries made up a big percentage of his diet, since he didn't like the taste of meat and there weren't many other plants. He would eat fish occasionally by heading down to a stream close by, but every fish was small and didn't make much of a meal. Besides that, he didn't know how to create a fire, or really any other survival techniques humans did. That night, he went to sleep just as usual, already thinking of what he'd do the next morning.
