> Personality:

Maye is an adventurous, brave, and free-spirited adolescent. She’s incredibly street-savvy and hardworking due to her rough upbringing. Despite her crumbling, Maye is incredibly optimistic, has accepted her shortened lifespan, and chooses to live each day to the fullest as if it were her last. She’s very warm, and soothing to be around for the most part, but can easily hold her own in an argument due to her quick wit and sharp tongue. Maye enjoys housework, taking a shine to cooking especially. She has a strong sense of morality, which doesn’t necessarily always line up with the law.

Despite her lack of schooling, Maye is intelligent, and enjoys understanding the inner workings of the world. She’s skilled in board games, her favorite being the game Virtuous, which she played with stones and lines drawn in the dirt as a child. She is meticulous and organized in everything she does, and highly values efficiency.

Due to Maye’s previous experience on her parents’ farm, she had a bit of a green thumb, and one of her favorite pastimes is tending to the Nuru’s garden. She’ll often use vegetables grown in the garden to prepare meals; having an attitude of “everything tastes better made from scratch”.

> Relationships:

Kehpri Nuru -- Maye’s friend, and the son of her employer, Niatra Nuru. Kehpri is a bit odd, and he was raised in the polar opposite way of Maye, but his cheerful disposition helped for them to become close fairly quickly. Kehpri always wants to learn from her, and follows her around on her adventures outside of his mansion. Maye enjoys his fen related ramblings, and is patient with his quirks. She’s aware of his crush on her, and though she doesn’t feel the same, she doesn’t mind it as he doesn’t try to make things weird.

Niatra Nuru -- Maye’s employer; Niatra is the rich noble who found Maye looking for work on the streets of the Capital. She brought Maye into her home and pays her a good wage to help with cooking, cleaning, gardening, and otherwise upkeeping her home. Maye is grateful to Niatra for the generous pay and free lodgings, respects her, and knows how to build her ego, but they’re not close due to Niatra’s reclusive nature.

Marmu -- Maye met Marmu in Solluhawh and developed a bond with them, even to the point that she considered her an older sibling figure. Marmu also has crumbling, and was the first Ptithian in the town to show kindness to Maye. She took her under their wing, comforting her, letting her know more about her disease and easing some of her fears. Together, the two decided to make a support group for other lefikás and hybrids with crumbling. Maye travelled with Marmu to the Capital, before striking off on her own.

Vhoh -- Maye’s father; during the short time he was alive, Vhoh was the one to take the most care of Maye. They were incredibly close despite his young age and lack of preparedness to be a father, and did his best to make Maye’s life good. He taught her to cook with plants grown on their land, and to play board games. She looked up to him, and it was his positive outlook even held while suffering that helped her later in life with the inherited disease.

Safsa -- Maye’s immature mother. Unlike her boyfriend Vhoh, Safsa wasn’t able to mature quickly enough as a parent. She avoided doing much to take care of Maye, and didn’t know how to connect with her, but did love her somewhat. Maye didn’t understand why Safsa didn’t pay attention to her, but wanted her affection. She was distraught when Safsa left, and blamed herself.

> Backstory:

Maye was born in the outskirts of Acaciia, on her parents’ farm. Her father, Vhoh, had grown up on that farm, while her mother, Safsa, had lived more towards the center of town and had moved in with him when she’d found out they were expecting Maye.

Her parents were very young and immature when they had her. Her father quickly adjusted to being an unexpected parent, but her mother struggled to accept the responsibilities that came with Maye, and spend most of her time away attending parties.

Vhoh and Maye became very close. He would take Maye everywhere with him on the farm, teaching her about gardening, about life being a beautiful thing, and about cherishing every moment. He doted on her as much as he could with the tight budget; making delicious meals with her at his side, playing games in the mud because of a lack of a board.

When Maye began to be around other children, she noticed them and their parents casting confused or scared looks at Vhoh. At the time, Maye didn't understand why he looked different from most lefikás, but later learned it was a genetic disease called crumbling. Some parents would keep their kids from playing with Maye, as if they feared it could transfer to them.

As Vhoh’s disease progressed, Safsa was gone more and more often for longer periods of time, and the roles switched to Maye becoming the caretaker before she could even fly.

Maye would have to pull up step stools to cook and use the counters. She’d spend hours a day picking up the slack of her ailing father and absent mother, and spent what little free time she had spending time with Vhoh.

The day he passed, her heart shattered. She’d lost her best friend.

Safsa now spent more time at home, always wearing black with grief, and refused to move or speak often. She wouldn’t cook, clean, or tend to the crops, and would only spend her time lounging and staring at the walls.

Maye, still young and naive, loved her mother despite her lack of caretaking, and continued her role of doing everything herself; from household chores, to waddling along the (long, for a cub her size) trek into town to sell produce, to sitting patiently and listening to Safsa’s crying fits and consoling her.

One day, when she was about six, Maye returned from town to find her mother gone. She waited in the house for several days, doing everything self sufficiently, and waiting for her mother to return.

Eventually, she had to go into town after slipping and getting hurt, where she was taken in by local guards and questioned about her parents. When they found out she had been abandoned, they made arrangements for her to be shipped off to an orphanage in Solluhawh.

In Solluhawh, Maye continued to be self-sufficient, and even cleaned up after the other children. She wasn’t necessarily a loner, and enjoyed spending time with and playing with the other kids, but acted and felt older, and didn’t end up making strong bonds with many of the others.

When out in town during the day, Maye began to notice another lefiká with crumbling like Vhoh. She didn’t try to speak to them at first, but would smile when she saw her. Eventually, she approached the older lefiká, who she found out was named Marmu, and developed a friendship. She began to see Marmu like an older sibling figure, and they’d talk about how she wanted to move to the Capital to work as an Arcanologist. After hearing Marmu’s descriptions of the Capital, Maye began to want to go there herself --but never worked up the courage to go .

Maye’s life was monotonous for a long time. She’d lost her spark for doing anything other than housework. She didn’t take unnecessary risks, and spent most of her time away from anything dangerous --or fun. Due to her hard work with little recognition, and her loose connection to Tucruit faith, she was given the virtue of humility for her eye tattoo.

This slow life changed when Maye was thirteen. She woke up to see the beginnings of crumbling affecting her, and realized her time had just become limited. She remembered what her father had taught her, about being free spirited and living each day with as much excitement as possible, and she decided then and there to leave for the Capital with Marmu.

Maye travelled with Marmu, and the older lefiká gave Maye tips on how to deal with her newly developed disease. They ended up coming up with the idea of a support group for others with crumbling, and decided to set it up once they got to the Capital.

When she finally arrived, Maye was shocked at how bustling it was in the city. She chose to strike off on her own, wanting to build a life for herself in the time she had left and to see and experience interesting things. She stayed in contact with Marmu though, and still went to the weekly support group meetings.

Maye took to living on the streets, going where the day took her, and living life more carefree. She pierced her nose, found a group of other adolescents, and took to flying before she could lose parts of her wings. For months, she

Eventually, Maye came across posters made by the rich noble, Niatra Nuru, hiring for a homemaker, and decided to apply. She was interviewed, hired for her skills, paid well, and given free lodging by her new employer on the property.

She was quick to notice the bizarre amount of paranoia and insecurity Niatra lived with, and did her best to help. She disagreed with many of Niatra’s aggressive views, but the noble was kind to her, and did her best to make her life comfortable. She didn’t treat Maye like a servant, but rather as an extension of the family; though not quite as close as she and her son Kehpri.

Kehpri was quick to take to liking Maye, and she was quick to enjoy being with him too. He was a bit awkward, but incredibly sweet and passionate about interesting subjects, so they became quick friends. In their free time, the friends would go out, often on a hike. Maye brought Kehpri out of his comfort zone little by little, taking him around the city, and sometimes outside of it to discover new places.

Unfortunately, as time passes, Maye crumbles more. She is missing both an eye and a foot, and a large enough chunk of one wing that she can no longer fly, but she’s at peace with her lifespan. She is not afraid of death, and makes sure each day is meaningful to herself. Maye enjoys seeing the views, going with her newfound “family” on their vacations to new places, and seeing the other cultures of Ptitheros. She refuses to despair… After all, she has a lot more on her bucket list to do!
