Call to Action

The castle was thrown into disarray as the alarm for “intruder!” was raised. Its miniscule guards ran to and fro, disorganized and panicked. And floating through them with ease was the intruder themself, a purple creature masked and robed, eyes glowing through their mask with feverish purpose as they swept aside the guards. They pushed their way through the halls, bashing open doors and finding their rooms lacking, entirely unchallenged by the outclassed castle staff.

This was the situation that Spear Waddle Dee awoke to. A passionate castle guard that would otherwise be easily lost in the crowd, Spear Dee built their entire world around protecting the King and his castle. So when they heard that a break-in had occurred while they were off-duty, they thought “of course,” and scrambled to put on their single piece of armor. Spaulder fastened, spear in hand, they ran to save the day.

For all the traits it could be said Spear Dee had, observant was one of them. Their fellow guards were too panicked to be any degree of helpful, running in circles and not much else, so Spear Dee knew they had to follow the trail of bruised and battered waddle dees to have any hope of detaining the intruder. They took off in a run, scanning their peers as they passed for signs of a lost battle, and careening down the halls with the surety that they would win the day. Whoever it was, they dishonored the great King Dedede, and that could hardly go unpunished! Why, just the thought made Spear Dee’s blood boil, their paws itch to stab something.

Five lefts, three rights, and a lot of straights, and there was a door ahead torn from its hinges. Spear Dee could see a robed figure lurking through the threshold, and with a warcry they launched themself forward spear-first. The figure whipped around, dodging with ease, and to Spear Dee’s frustration they could see the enemy was flying. That would make them harder to pin down.

“That’s new,” the intruder noted flippantly.

Spear Dee launched again. The intruder dodged once more, and suddenly in a flash of purple Spear Dee found themself flung into the nearest wall. It wasn’t gentle, they crashed into the stone and lost handle on their weapon, falling to the ground stunned. Struggling to cling to consciousness, they raised their gaze to the intruder defiantly. The moonlight from the window wreathed their form in pale light, so that Spear Dee’s spinning vision couldn’t make out any details. Next to them hovered a purple dagger, glowing and sparkling. Their eyes burned a similar color. They’d already turned their attention away, to a treasure chest behind them.

Spear Dee growled as their enemy turned their back to them.

The purple dagger savagely thrust itself into the seam of the chest’s lock, and the lid was wrenched open with abandon. The intruder dug through the contents, growing more agitated, before dumping everything to the ground and sifting through it with fervor. Spear Dee demanded themself to stand up. They made it halfway before their limbs gave out. They growled again.

The intruder finally snarled in frustration, pulling out a battered old mask and pitching it aside. They slowed, purple dagger lowering and fading to particles. They hovered. A moment. Visor dark and body still. Spear Dee began struggling to find their feet again. Then, snapping back into motion, the intruder did an about-face, and flew out the window.

“C-coward,” Spear Dee wanted to yell, but their voice caught quiet.

Their body pulsed with pain, but they pushed on. They had to get up. Get up! They’d been through worse, mind over matter, nothing could keep them down and nothing ever would! Especially a feckless intruder such as this! Spear Dee hissed as they forced their aching body to comply, dragging themself to their feet through sheer force of will. When they stood, they stood tall, and snatched up their spear with triumph.

“Prepare yourself, intruder,” they proclaimed, pointing the tip of their weapon to the retreating speck of a figure out the window. Their days were now numbered, for Spear Dee would not stop until they were vanquished for their transgressions!

Then, the angry little waddle dee threw themself out the window.
