It was another one of those nights for the Feathered Shifter.

They found themselves in bed, a blanket snugly wrapped around them. They weren’t sure what time it was, honestly. Qinggan just figured it was late, based on the lack of their pom-pom or ma waking them up and the seeming darkness of things. The rain fell against the window, pitter-patters filling the silence.

Gan wished they could see it. They wished they could see the dark clouds mudding up the sky, the puddles that were scattered on the ground.

But they never could. Nothing could fix what he did to them so long ago. Even if they’re recovering, and with a much better family now (if one could even call Maurice their family), even if they lived up to the day where all of that damage was gone - they would never really see it, no?

They felt their chest tighten.

Think happy thoughts, Gan.

Don’t cry, Gan.

They bit their lip, holding in a sob…

The sound of the ongoing drizzle was soothing, sure.

But never would they be able to see the raindrops fall again.
