"Watch it!"

Cygnus jumped out of the way of the razor sharp fangs aimed his way. "Feisty one, isn't she?"

"Newborns usually are. Sure you can handle her?"

"Kal's out sick, remember?" He and the week-old filly eyed each other warily. "It'll have to be me. You and I both know that babies need stronger handlers. Why can't momma be in the ring again?"

"She's laid out with a gash on her leg. We still ain't sure if she caught it on something or if this one took a gander at her. Seems to be testing her teeth early."

"Wouldn't put it past her..." He deftly dodged another nip aimed his way.

"Your straps nice and tight? Gloves secure?"

"Yeah Mom. Besides, you'll be in there backing me up."

The announcer called their number, and the trio trotted out to the applause of the crowd. Feeding out most of the 50 ft lead, Cygnus gave Elektra plenty of room to show off.

And show off she did. Prancing, bucking, heel flips, and a few rears were thrown in for good measure before she finally slid to a stop.

Her head turned towards Cygnus and zeroed in on him. He slowly began reeling in the slack.

"Watch her now..." Addie raised the extra-long drop-lash whip with the rattle on the end and gave it a solid shake in front of the filly's face, but she had picked her target and would not be swayed from her course.

Both of the humans tuned out the announcer's explanation of all the protective gear as Elektra bolted forward. The teen barely dove out of the way, seamlessly tossing the coil of lead to his mother in just enough time for the filly to hit the end less than 8 inches from his leg.

The green eyes held his blue ones for a few moments before she snorted and took a step back so her head wasn't quite as twisted. Cygnus gathered himself up and dusted himself off before coming over to take the leather lead once more.

"Well there ya have it folks! An excellent example of why foals are allowed extra handlers in the ring. Let's give them a hand, shall we?"

The quiet applause followed them out of the ring, the audience apparently not wanting to set the filly off again. Thank goodness for small miracles.
