It’s a harsh and cruel night when your body fails you again.

Pain twisting in your joints, brain so scrambled you can’t take the texture of your coat on your skin and you wriggle out of it as best you can, torn between going slowly to not hurt yourself more and just ripping the thing off of yourself. It’s cold without it but it’s better this way.

The cold will numb your body enough and overload your senses enough that maybe just maybe a good night’s sleep is on it’s way. You doubt it.

You barely hear the door creak open, your name mumbled sleepily but with all the concern in the world. Fear and adrenaline join the pain in your bones as your ears twitch to the sound of footsteps padding across the room, and you’re close to scrabbling to find something to hide your pain and sorrow with when a hand is gently placed on your shoulder.

A short whine and ears flattening against your head is all it takes for him to get the message. Crawling onto the bed as carefully as he can, he curls around you, fur warm and soft, and acceptable to your senses. A loud purr rumbles deep in his chest already, vibrating through into your spine, giving just that little bit of relief for you to stay comfortable. His arm drapes over your middle, loose, letting you direct exactly where you want it to lay.

You don’t deserve this. You know you don’t. But rest is tempting, and you know he’ll never let you out of his grasp until you’re feeling better. A ragged sigh escapes your chest, and your eyes close as he snuggles in closer, letting you drift away into a gentle sea of sleep.
