A collection of short stories featuring Jophiel and Iris, a little snapshot into their lives. More to come (since writing short stories separate from my book is fun)

Asleep on the Couch

Jophiel stepped into the apartment quietly when she got home from work. She was almost always quiet about it, not wanting to be a bother to her flatmates.

She paused when she reached the living room. It was quieter than usual, and the cause was immediately clear. Iris, the demon, was asleep on the couch, clutching the book she'd been reading in one hand over her chest. One leg dangled off the couch, and her hair poofed up around her face and torso like a white cloud.

She looked...almost heavenly. Her mouth hung open slightly and there was a rare expression of peace on her face.

Jophiel stared in shock for a second. Had she ever seen Iris looking so peaceful? They'd known each other for so long now, over 100 lifetimes for Iris, a few thousand years for Jophiel. And not once had the demon looked so at peace.

The moment only lasted for a few seconds before the demon's face flashed to pain, and then contorted with fear. Iris's feet twitched and the hand holding the book jerked into a defensive position over her face. A soft groan escaped her lips and wetness formed at the corners of still sleeping eyes.

Jophiel darted forward, moving the book away and pulling the demon into a tight hug.

She might not know how to deal with peace, but pain? She was an expert in pain.

Iris continued to sleep, cuddling into her friend's chest softly, the pain fading and a small, almost invisible smile hovering on her lips.

Author's Notes

Not really long for me, but it may change.

(The first draft in a notebook was like 50% exposition HAH)
