For a few weeks now, young Ellyjobell had had a lot of trouble seeing, and had to squint and get close up when she wanted to read anything. Always thinking about cause and effect, Elly had guessed that this was because of the many fumes she exposed herself to during her experiments. Some of them had been acid, and could very well have eaten away a little at her eyes, making them less accurate.

True to herself, Ellyjobell began to investigate around glass. She had noticed that looking through badly made windows distorted one's vision. Elly conjectured that, if one created a piece of glass that was deformed in exactly the right shape, it could actually correct your vision.. Elly played around with glass, and crystals, and thanks to a smith uncle who let her use his forge, as well as spending hours sanding and polishing glass, Elly ended up with two lenses, about the size of an apple, and a centimeter or two thick, joined together by a metal frame her uncle had made and fitted so it attached to her head behind the ears and rested on her nose. On the first day she wore the two glass pieces- or glasses, as she called them- Elly was ecstatic. She could see! She could read words like 'knave' or 'probability' from a distance, without needing to squint!

Her family's reaction, mostly her siblings, however, wasn't exactly what she had expected.
"Haha Elly, your eyes are huge!"
"Your thing just makes you look like you're glooking at everything! Glooky!"
"Yeah, Glooky !!"

Had there been any malice in her siblings words, the experience would not have been very pleasant. But Elly and her siblings had always had a great relationship, and all agreed that new nicknames were always good. It was in honest fun that Elly accepted this one.
"Glooky it is!" she replied with a twinkle in her eyes.
