Mid-conversation, she swapped her cards from right hand to left, grabbed the collar of her jacket, and hiked it up to hide her face. It was to no real avail – if anything, the movement drew the governor's eye. Ines stopped, lingered a moment, then changed her path to approach the table of gamblers. She stopped at the table's side with a curious smile. "Agent Wroxeter!"

Maggot swiftly dropped her collar and spread an arm wide in friendly greeting. "Governor Tezel! What a surprise!"

"Isn't it! Aren't you banned?"

Reaching around her chair, Maggot took her rifle from where it was hung and handed it over by its grip, looking upwards to her. "I'm off duty." Like that settled it, she returned to the card game.

Ines turned the gun over in her hands without much enthusiasm. "You know it's not that easy."

Maggot managed to play one more card before turning once more, arm over the chair back, eyes big and imploring. "Ines... Please?"

Somewhere between sorry and unamused, Ines dispiritedly lifted the rifle.

"Alright, alright, alright." Maggot tossed her hand of cards onto the table and rose to her feet. She let Ines escort her for about three steps before breaking and doubling back. She produced one more card from her sleeve and placed it delicately on top of the others. "I was cheating, if you were wondering." With new hustle in her step, Maggot retreated and carried on out, Ines at her back.

The night outside was cool and quiet next to the boisterous heat of the public house. Stopping by an alley at the side of the old building, Maggot turned to face Ines, who held the rifle back out to her. "C'monnn," said Maggot. "You really gonna make me go? At this time of night? All on my lonesome?"

Before Ines could answer, Maggot was already taking the rifle back, giving it and the rest of her belongings a once over. Ines watched her, a faint smile back on her face. "You know I can't let you stay."

"Yeah, I know."

"Not as long as you're still with the Black Lantern, at least." Maggot didn't reply. After a moment of quiet, Ines added, "You don't seem very happy with them, Ben."

That brought a smile to her voice. "Yeah?"

"If you ever want to stay, there'll be a place for you here."

Finally she looked up, clearly entertained, "Wow. And how's the pay?"

Unwaveringly earnest, "It's a decent living. Maybe a happier life."

Maggot laughed, sharp and hearty, and turned back to her rifle.
