"I love you."
Each letter is a phantom that finds rest in the spaces where his rib bones press against his skin.

"I love you."
You repeat the words. You have been repeating the words. Your throat is raw from repeating the words.

"I love you."
Come the morning, you will fall, like a shooting star, a wish for humanity, a wish for the future.
A wish for heaven. Come the morning, you will not be able to love him.

"I love you."
He is crying, the silks draped across his face are clinging to his perfect skin, and you slide up, slide your hands over him, cup his cheeks, your thumbs coaxing the soft material up.

"I love you."
"I know"
He whispers and his words shake. You watch the heavens in his eyes, the countless stars, and you know what he is seeing in your own. He is seeing the sun boil. He is seeing wildfires. He is seeing the rapture. The end of days.

"I know and that is the worst of it all. That I will love you fore eons when that word means no more to you than a remembered summer breeze."
Your forehead rests against his, your wings stretching outwards, then folding inwards again over him, trapping you together.

"Remember me when the angel you love dies."
You watch his lips twist around his next words, as pained as if he were wounded in battle.
"You will never die. You will always be a ghost."

You kiss his trembling lips.
"I love you."
