Cursus Honorum | Lesson 0 | Majus

Nix Regina had always felt it in her veins. The cold, rushing through her like a powerful, yet controlled stream. She knew she possessed magic – the only question was how to use it. She spent weeks in the snow covered mountains, exploring icy caves and walking over glaciers. She felt the ice move beneath her hooves and always knew exactly where to step to safely cross, but despite all her focus and conviction, she never managed to create anything but a chilly breath. Until…

One fateful night she was walking along a mountain crest in the pale light of a full moon, covering everything in a shimmering silver veil. It was so bright, she could see everything and felt the moon charge up her powers. She had heard about this phenomenon, but had not believed in it until that moment. She closed her eyes, channelled her magic and… a little snowflake fell on her nose. The mare looked up, but there were no clouds above her. «that’s ALL?!» She got angry and screamed in a fit of rage, which awoke something else from its slumber. Suddenly she felt a strong breeze, coming and going with the beat of large wings. When Nix turned her head, she saw a huge bird-like creature, but its beak was filled with sharp teeth. It screeched and extended its claws as it shot down towards her, but there was nowhere for her to run! She flinched, bracing for the impact, but suddenly noticed a strange plinking sound from all around her. When nothing happened she opened her eyes and saw the creature kept its distance, still furiously calling at her, but there was something else. Icy crystals had formed all around the ballator’s head, some even shooting towards the beast, scaring it off more and more until it finally gave up and left. When Nix Regina realised what had happened she snorted and proudly raised her head. «It’s about time! Now THIS is a worthy power for a queen like me!»
