Author's Notes

this is my first blurb for these two idiots

Veritas grumbled to herself as she dug at the disgustingly muddy ground, stopping often to shake her muddy talons with an unhappy sigh.

"Out of ALL interests, I had to choose the one that got me the muddiest..." Veritas muttered to herself, her claws fighting around a particularly stubborn rock.

Now, of course, she loved being a gardener--each day she surrounded herself with flora and fauna alike, experimenting with her many gardens. But of course... she was a dragon with *dignity*, and any dignified dragon didn't like getting all sorts of dirt splattered on themself.

Veritas let out a frustrated huff, cursing the stupid rock that *still*, despite her best efforts, stayed stuck in that absurdly repulsive ground. A part of her longed to get all of this sludge off her and go sit in her favorite café... but she knew she had a job to do. (A job she was currently regretting.)

As she was about to continue her glorious battle with her greatest enemy, that stinking rock, her thoughts were interrupted by a sunshiney voice. Veritas found herself recognizing that voice, and turned to see a familiar, beaming face.

"I believe I have figured something out about you," Été remarked, a sly grin on their face.

Veritas rolled her eyes, but indulged them, "... oh wise one, what have you found out?"

"I theorize," Été dramatically paused, "you have a strong dislike of mud."

Veritas deadpanned at them, before chuckling and giving the smug looking dragon a slow clap with her wings, "Wow. You practically read my soul. I am so amazed."

Été let out a laugh that sounded like bells ringing, a large grin on their face as they hopped up to sit next to Veritas, looking down at the mud with an alarming excited look on their face.

“Do you seriously not like mud??” Été asked, their voice turning from laughter to confusion.

She gave them an equally quizzical tone, “Do you seriously like mud??”

The dragon laughed, “OF COURSE? It’s just so wonderful- you can just squish around in it and find all sorts of relics in there!! There was this one time I was in this giant pit for hours and I kept finding these amazing fossilized bones and IT WAS SO COOL.”

She found herself grinning back, the crystalled dragons joy reflecting back into her. Which was. Very unusual. “Wow. That is just. So cool,” she snarked, and was not surprised when she got an excited “I KNOW RIGHT?” that completely ignored her sarcasm.

“Well, if you love mud and digging so much, why dontcha do it for me?” She jokingly asked, and almost immediately was surprised when the excited dragon flared their wings wide, exposing the phiera patterns, hopping from foot to foot.

“CAN I?”

“I mean- if you really want to?? Do you not have anything planned for today??”

“Now I don’t!!”

20 minutes later, Veritas was relaxing in the shade while the absurdly bright dragon was happily digging every row she needed. It was very odd, to say the least- up until a few days ago, she’d hardly known the sunkissed dragon. She’d noticed them among the tribe a while back- hard to miss the crystallized yellow glow- but other than that? Hardly knew anything.

Then, they met in her favorite café, beginning to chat over their shared interest in academics. Veritas usually didn’t find herself this happy and interested in a conversation with someone she hardly knew, but Été was refreshing and new. She knew that they were a relics gatherer- specifically interested in unearthing old objects to inspect- and she knew they were an avid seeker of knowledge.

Reflecting on all of this, she found herself wanting to learn more about this optimistic, cheery dragon. This optimistic, cheery dragon that for a reason she couldn’t deduce, was happy to dig muddy holes for her.

Her thoughts were interrupted again, but now by a mud splattered, positively radiant dragon.

“Mademoiselle, you may consider your holes… holed? Dugged? Dought? Anyway- Never fear- No treacherous mud will be near you again,” Été giggled once more, looking disgustingly dignified with all of that oozing mud dousing them.

Veritas stared at the rows- the rows that would have taken her all day- that had been finished in less than an hour. She cleared her throat, and found herself laughing, “Why thank you, oh so brave one,” and after a moment, she added in a more genuine voice (one that even surprised her), “but uh- seriously. Thank you. It means- a lot.”

It may have been Veritas’s imagination, but she could’ve sworn Été’s sunkissed cheeks darkened a little more.

“Of course, of course,” Été waved it off with their wing, “The pleasure is mine, truely.”

As both dragons left for their respective homes, they both found themselves consumed with the thoughts of another dragon- and despite everything, they both found themselves yearning to see the other again.
