((NOTE: What follows is unedited manuscript from back when I wrote this in high school. Please don’t make too much fun of it.))

It was morning. It was already past 9, and Mr. Chien was nowhere to be seen. It was about time they got off to work, so Marco decided to check on him. He opened the guest room door to find Mr. Chien wrapped up in the blankets, sleeping peacefully.

Marco grabbed a chair and placed it next to the bed. He sat down and stifled his laughter. It was always fun to see someone’s reaction when they wake up to you staring at them. He had done this at least once to all his friends, and the most common reaction was everyone screaming like girls (or in one girl’s case, screaming like a guy). He leaned forward and began to poke Mr. Chien’s face. “Hey~ Wake up sleepy head~”

Mr. Chien slowly opened his eyes. In one deft movement, Marco was whimpering on the floor with his hands his head and Mr. Chien was on the other edge of the bed trembling and muttering things in Chinese.

“AHHHRRGGHHH!” Marco recovered slightly and began to rub the back of his head where Mr. Chien had hit him.

Mr. Chien regained his senses and stared with some fear at Marco. “I-I’m sorry! It was just a reflex…!”

“WHAT KIND OF REFLEX IS THAT?!”

[What they’re saying is supposed to be in Chinese. Translation Convention at work.]

It was back in Mr. Chien’s college days. His friends were outside talking while he was sleeping in the dorm.

“Hey. Where’s Jie Qi anyway? I thought he was coming.”

“He’s in the room.”

“Huh? Why don’t you wake him up? He’s your roommate.”

“I’d… rather not.”

“Fine. I’ll wake him up.”

“Do you want to die?! I’m warning you.”

“It can’t be that bad.”

His friend walked into the room and the door shut behind him. The roommate stood nervously near the door. He could hear some talking like “Hey, wake up Jie Qi,” and before long there were sounds of someone being brutally beaten. The door flung open and his friend was thrown out the room headfirst. The door slammed closed and the friend laid there injured on the floor.

“I warned you.”

“Holy shit! Did that just happen?!”

“He’s a terror in the morning.”

“Did you try waking him up once?”

“I was warning you from experience.”

“Damn you…! Tell me these things beforehand!”

“I told you not to. You paid the price.”

“I pity the woman he’s going to marry.”
