Though they no longer live under the same roof, Haytham and Malik still see each other more often than not. While one is a kind and affectionate older brother, the other is sarcastic and poison-tongued. Arguing, fighting, helping each other...a typical relationship between siblings, sons to loving parents.

Convenience Store

Haytham had stayed up a bit until half-past one in the morning playing around with a program he was having fun dissecting as of late.  He was used to pulling all-nighters with his disastrous sleeping patterns but this time he had gotten started getting back to a more acceptable sleeping schedule to prepare for school. Sure, he was nonchalant, but he still had enough reason to know that he wouldn’t hold well enough at school if he slept less than he already does.

However, sleep eluded him a bit at the moment and instead, a pang of hunger reminded him of the dinner he half-ate that ended up in his brother’s stomach, as usual. He didn’t feel particularly hungry back then, but he sure craved for some snacks now.

After taking a good stretch and feeling like his body was his own again, he lazily got up and made his way to the kitchen, a floor below the main one. Careful to not make too much noise as to not disturb the quietness of the night, he skimmed through the fridge and cupboards in hopes of finding something to nibble on until his stomach calmed down and let him sleep.

Suddenly, the lights went on and Haytham startled, the sensation strong enough to disrupt the control on his hand which was holding a cupboard’s handle whose door closed in a pang as a result.

“Bismillah ‘rahman rahim!” he let out through gritted teeth.

“It’s just me you know. Don’t make me out as some kind of ghost.”

The intruder’s voice was lower than usual, a bit hoarse and obviously sleepy.

Haytham glared at his brother, Malik. He really wanted to skin him alive.

“The fuck do you want? Can’t you say anything when you come in?”

Malik was often causing near-heart attacks with his antics. His movements have always been very quiet and his footsteps didn’t make any sound at all. The fact that he usually walked around the house barefoot didn’t help and their mother had to remind him to wear something in or threw a pair of indoor shoes at his face without a word.

“Can’t help it. Wanted to go to the bathroom and heard mice scavenging for food instead.” Joked Malik “Haha, you sure got scared huh?”

“I’d kill you and throw the body somewhere in the Michelifen.”

“Good luck with that then” responded Malik with disinterest.

Haytham hated his undisturbed attitude. He either never responded to his barbs or his responses shut him up. Sometimes he would feign being hurt like a drama queen but nothing could shake him at all.

In the end he was too tired to care and simply continued looking through the cupboard he was previously trying to search as his brother got himself a glass of water, his phone in hand. Haytham watched him from the corner of his eye.

“Chattin’ with your girlfriend?”

Malik looked up from his phone and smiled softly “She just went to sleep.”

Damn, that mushy expression he was wearing was sickening.

“Gross, you’re embarrassing.”

“You asked though.”

They exchanged banter this way until Haytham had to come to terms with the fact that there was nothing left to snack on. He highly suspected that his brother was the cause, the guy had a black hole instead for a stomach and it didn’t look like it.

“I think I’m getting hungry too” whispered Malik.

They both eyed each other for a second.

“I’ll get my keys.”

“Let me get my wallet.”

In the end they both walked down to the nearest convenience store and grabbed a few things to eat, sharing them in the kitchen as they scrolled through their feeds.
