*tick tock*
Parides stared intently at the clock- maybe if she squinted at it hard enough then it would go faster. It did not.
She could feel her sanity slowly sipping away as she watched it, the more she focused on it the slower it seemed to go, but what else was she supposed to do, laying here in this damn hospital bed- she felt fine, honestly but she just had wait until they told her she was alright. But by then she’d have a whole new issue, of having died of boredom.
Her ears perked up as she heard a commotion in the hall, it sounded like two people were having an argument but she couldn’t make out any specifics. Well there was only one thing to do now, go and investigate, she couldn’t just ignore this one and only potentially interesting thing.
They had told her not to get up and walk around too much but did she listen? No, she never listened.
When she stood up it hit her that maybe they had a reason for telling her to stay in bed, and by hit her I mean it punched her like a tidal wave, her knees crumpled and she fell back onto the bed with a thud. She shook her head and tried to refocus her eye on the surroundings, ideally WITHOUT throwing up.
She could take this as a sign that maybe she wasn’t ready to go wandering around. She could accept defeat and lay back down. But she wasn’t the kind of person to give up so easily. So, taking a deep breath and steeling herself she stood up again.
BUT just as her luck would have it, by the time she had finally hobbled outside the room to see what was going on. Everything had died down, there was nothing left to see. But just before she was about to concede and retreat back to her bed, a man approached her.
“Hello miss-“ She jumped, she had seem him approaching but hadn’t really registered that he was coming towards HER “May I trouble you for your help? I need some assistance with a small matter.” He looked wired on 10 cups of coffee and had heavy dark circles under his eyes. He sure did need assistance all right. His name tag read Dr. Seamus.
“I don’t work here.” She said stupidly, he raised his eyebrows and looked at her bandages. She was obviously a patient at the hospital. “Uh- sure.” She probably was supposed to lay back down, but he was a doctor, likely in another field, but all the same, she had a doctor asking her to do something, and anything was better than nothing so yeah, sure, why the hell not.
He looked surprised and she got the feeling that he had asked multiple people before anyone actually said yes. “Right this way Ma’am.” He gave a curt nod and began speedwalking away, Parides managed to keep up but felt like she might black out at any moment, it was taking all she had just to keep walking she wasn’t even sure if her vision had gone dark or not. But he paid her no mind, too wrapped up in his own worries to notice whether or not she was falling behind.
When they finally made it into the room she realized that when he said “small” problem, he meant small as in… infants… babies… and they looked sick too. She supposed it was a hospital after all.
“Are they contagious?” she asked, her face wrinkling up at the sight of them.
He nodded “Yes, very!” But noticing her reaction he clarified “Oh! Don’t worry, you won’t have to interact with them! I just need someone to help with my busywork while I take care of these rascals.”
Ah! Paperwork, she was half tempted to wander back to her bed and call it a grave as she actually, literally died of boredom. But, that would be rude, she supposed that she could at least be glad not to be the one dealing with the contagious disgusting babies.
She thought that it was rather imprudent for a doctor to let a complete stranger go through his medical files but whatever- he clearly had enough issues to deal with.
She mostly zoned out doing this, this was very likely MORE boring and tedious than her day had started. But at least she’d be back to work soon- well, thinking about it they had actually put her on paperwork duty. She was going to spend the rest of her life doing paperwork and she wasn’t sure that she could handle that. And it was in this moment that she knew her life was over, and things couldn’t ever go back.
