» Describe a clan tradition (100+ words)

One of gladeclans traditions is the Mudswim. This is an important point for the young cats of the group, as its essentially the first time they learn to swim in the marsh and get their fur dirty taking their first steps into being warriors and learning to hunt in the territory they call their home. There is a pool of shallow water at the base of their camp's cliffs that is safe- just deep enough to swim for a few dozen feet, though very murky and muddy and most cats come out on the other side covered in muck. The swim is jokingly referred to as the moment where a cat truly joins Gladeclan. If an apprentice can't make the swim, the other warriors carry them back and let them practice to try again later.

Mirestar & Redpaw

"Let all cats gather beneath the stones for a clan meeting."

Mirestar's voice echoed over the small camp, through the cavern outside. She sat and curled her tail around her paws as she watched the cats slowly gather to join her at her call. It was invigorating, in a way. To see her work start to come to fruition, she could finally see a clan coming together, these cats depended on her, and she depended on them. She'd smile to herself, but managed to keep it buried for now. Coastfawn was, as usual, the last to fumble in. He had the habit of being fashionably late.

"I've called you here today because we have an apprentice to make. Redkit?" she called to the nursery, as the tiny, somewhat paranoid kit slowly made her way from the darkness of the deep cavern. The nursery was a deep cove buried in the rock, easy to defend and extremely solid, it offered protection from the elements and the cats had quickly decided it was the safest place for the little ones to stay safely.

Redkit wiggled just a little excitedly as she made her way to the middle of the cavern, sitting she stared up at her leader with wide, excited eyes, and Mirestar finally broke a smile back to her. "Well, Redkit, its time for you to start your journey as a warrior.. You're more than ready." she said. "As leader, I've decided that Floodpale will be your mentor." She looked to her deputy as he stepped forward. "As a deputy should mentor a kit, at least once..." she chuckled. Her clan needed a second in command, and when he'd joined there had been no apprentice, so for a time she'd had to forego that rule to make things work. But she intended to resolve that now. "I know that you will train her well, and that you will impart all you have learned since becoming a true warrior yourself." she nodded to Floodpale, who bowed his head respectively before moving to sit with Redkit.

Redkit's eyes glittered with tears of joy. She had been through a lot, seen too much for a cat of her age already, and finally her chance was ahead of her, a start to change things. Though she couldn't bite back the nagging doubt of the dreams that plagued her. Was she making the step to ruin?

"And on that, I declare you Redpaw." Mirestar called; interrupting Redpaw's worries. The other clan cats called for their new apprentice, and Louie bayed in joy in the background. Mirestar felt her heart lifted once again. She had the though she would never tire of that feeling.

Gravelcry & Coastfawn

"Gravelcry? Do you think that I should have been a medicine cat like you?" Coastfawn's soft words echoed as he held his leg out. Hurt, again. Gravelcry grunted dismissively where he was pressing cobwebs into the nasty cut. The young warrior had fallen trying to climb... again and come crawling back injured for the fourth time that moon. "I mean it- I mean I'm obviously not cut out to be a warrior..would being a medicine cat be easier? Surely its easier to heal than hurt..." he said. Gravelcry shrugged his massive shoulders, letting out an annoyed "hmph" before he left his leg be. Coastfawn tried to move it to stand but Gravelcry swatted him with his big paw "Sit." he retorted. He was a cat of few words, but Coastfawn wasn't intimidated by his gruff nature. He never had been; he'd known him since he was a tiny kit and Gravelcry had been one of the only dependable things in his life.

"Its not easier." Gravelcry answered as he fussed in the corner of his den with some of the piles of herbs he had. "What? Why not?" Coastfawn Inquired. Gravelcry's eyes grew distant as he looked away, staring mindlessly into space, almost as if something was speaking to him from a world invisible to the other warrior. "At least when you fight, you can fight and fight and maybe win. With medicine, you may only give someone the tools to fight, and stand back to let things play out as it may." he answered. "Sometimes, its all you can do to watch as a cat joins starclan. Cats you know. Cats you love. I wouldn't wish such a thing on my worst enemy." he decided, firmly. Coastfawn just sighed "But I'm sure as starclan not cut out for this warrior thing. Maybe i'd be ok at that..." he glanced away.

Gravelcry grunted again "Give it time. You've only been a warrior for a few moons. You'll find your feet." really, he didn't want the clumsy and lacking-of-common-sense cat tuttering around in his den messing up all his carefully organized supplies. "You just have to figure out where you fit in here. We both do. We've only lived in this swamp for two moons, of course you're not used to it." he answered him. Coastfawn's ears perked at that "I guess..." he responded. He didn't quite buy it, but Gravelcry had never steered him wrong before.

"Thank you..." he called to him. The older cat's tail waved behind him. "Now you sit and behave." he walked over to rest a paw playfully on the other cats head. He'd never had a son of his own, he couldn't. But Coastfawn had become the closest he'd get. And he was grateful for that.

The medicine cat truly wished the best for the young warrior, and seeing him lost in his own doubt was painful. But he still would never let him see the things he'd seen.
