Prologue

It was located in a small valley, somewhere south of what whimsy scholars called the equator.

The area was bordered in the southeast by a stretch of mountains tipped with snow in the winter, and brisk wind in the summer. Each morning its dramatic cliff face stole the pleasantries of watching the sun rise, though the west more than made up for it with its sunsets. Every evening cast the valley in a beautiful orange, with long, thin shadows that crept in long strides over the grass.

The weather left something to be desired, with torrential downpour one third of the year, and chilly breezes and overbearing heatwaves the rest.
The warmer months brought with it a northerly wind, carrying sprinkles of sand from distant deserts and mesas. Though these periods didn’t last long, and were quickly replaced with boughts of chilliness and long months of too-cold-to-go-without-layers.

To the south were boot-stealing bogs and roofed forests that stretched off far into the distance. Beyond that, most assumed was just unending oceans, dotted with small islands that gradually fizzled off in number.

North was the gateway to an endless world, filled with woods and jungles and great alpine forests, waiting just out of reach for those that could brave the choppy seas, or bear the distance on foot.

Though it was surrounded on all sides by land, the valley proved to be a difficult place to reach. Not a lot of people visited the small settlement, but those that did found it hard to leave.

Perhaps it was the pocket of relief, that to those who did not live through its months of rain, believed to be a sanctuary from the warm lands that bordered every side.

Perhaps it was the peacefulness of solitude, from creature and evil alike.

Perhaps that was simply where they ended up.

Those that decided to stay dubbed the valley ‘Spawn’, though why, foreigners could never work out.
