Finding a Mythical Creature with Shaded Sunset

Truth-Or-Deer plodded along the soft mulchy dirt of the forest, each cloven hoof sinking slightly into it. There had been a rain that had dampened the woods. The fresh rain had died down, leaving a nice smell and humidity in the air. Three foals trotted along with various levels of excitement for the adventure they were on. Her own twins, Elk-a-Seltzer and Cookie-Doe played around with each other as they dashed around the trees. They were more than excited, especially after the fun of the last event that had arisen. Lesser-Of-Two-Weevils was a little shyer and felt more out of place. He was more reserved and stuck close to the adult spectraloosa’s side.

“Who's that Mom?” Cookie said, gesturing with her head towards a black spectraloosas with a flowing silver mane and tail. It’s eyes and hooves were a rich red, which had the twin foals associating it with evil. Weevil, however, was mesmerized by this colour and thought about how he missed his mother who had a very nice red mane.

“Hm, I suppose we’ll see.” Deer put herself between the foals and the stranger naturally before speaking out to them, “Hello?”

The darkness around the stranger shifted and her shadow became long tendrils that reached out into the ground. Deer recognized this magic as similar to her mate Cyan’s ability, but for the foals it was simply another spooky effect of unknown origin. She seemed to be concentrating, but soon realized the party nearby. The shadows returned to normal before she spoke out to them, “Hello, sorry, I was trying to search for something. You wouldn’t have seen a big, angry looking snake have you? Oh, well, actually, of course not. You probably wouldn’t be standing in front of me if you had.”

“I can be a snake! See! I’m poisonous!” Elk exclaimed, frothing at the mouth with a bright acidic liquid. It ran down his chin and neck, finding its way to the ground where it left patches of corrosion.

“That’s nothing like a snake! A dinosaur maybe. And snakes are venomous-“ Cookie-Doe argued with her brother.

“Uhm, uhm, no, I haven’t seen one. Oh but in my dad’s game there’s this super scary thing. A basil lisp? It’s cool! And if you look at it, you die!” Weevil started off quiet, but got excited when referring to his father’s games.

“Yes! A basilisk! That’s exactly what I’m trying to find.” The stranger was pleased at the young beetle’s response. “Would you mind helping me on my search? I’ve sensed him nearby, so I know it’s close. Oh, and my name is Shaded Sunset by the way.”

“Woah woah woah,” Deer interrupted, “It’s nice to meet you and all Shaded Sunset, but what’s this about it killing whoever it looks at? I will not put these foals in that kind of danger.”

Deer and Shaded Sunset conversed but the excitement of the foals combined to overpower them. The adults concluded that they could protect the kids and keep them out of harms way for the most part, and so off they went to search the area.

Shaded Sunset’s shadow magic was greatly beneficial to the search. She could set out feelers through the shadows and search through the feel of those, rather than risk seeing it herself. Cookie-Doe thought they could be helpful by smoking out the snake and tried catching some brush on fire. Due to the wet landscape, however, she had quite the hard time and eventually was defeated.

“Wait! Over there!” Sunset called out to the others. Everyone except for Cookie who was pre-occupied with their fire not catching, and Sunset themselves looked in the direction that Sunset had referred to. This was very much to their detriment. Elk, Deer, and Weevil all froze and began their decent towards death.

Sunset dashed towards the basilisk while keeping her head down, sending their shadows to do their bidding in capturing this mythical serpent. Cookie however, rushed towards its family and the other foal.

“No, no! Please be okay!” Cookie shouted and cried out. She frantically went between each of them, nuzzling and prodding in an attempt to get a reaction. To get some response that could give her hope of life. There seems to be no hope in Cookie’s eyes, but she refused to believe it. Through time of need something awakened inside of the foal, and life force started flowing back into the basilisk’s victims. The death process reversed and soon enough Cookie’s tears were being wiped up by her mother.

“Oh my baby Cookie, thank you.” Deer embraced her foal, and the others as well. “I shouldn’t have listened, I put you guys in real danger.”

Nobody had much clue as to what had happened to pull them away from mortal danger like that, however, after dealing with the basilisk Shaded Sunset shared some light on it. They had seen something similar before. Healing magic. Out of dire circumstance, Cookie had gained a new ability.
