3. They would prefer to not be involved at all.

In the long list of events that were Spite's problem to deal with, Spite decided pretty quickly that the death of the foreign trade attaché and his servant were distinctly not on that list.

Sure, the death of innocent individuals was a bad thing, and she was far from happy that the lighthearted tone of the Tourney's event had soured upon the discovery of the double homicide, but in the end, there was nothing she could possibly do but stay out of it.

After all, an unknown wild mage with multiple methods of delivering poison to her enemies, found in the midst of the big event? At this rate, she would be lucky if she didn't get accused of the murder. No, it was far better to stay far away from the crime scene, the guards, the rumors, and other consequences of the deaths of foreign dignitaries.

That night, Spite would leave town, she decided. She could probably lay low for one more night before accusations were made and guilt was assigned, but no longer than that. Besides, she had come to Mead on business—to find work as a mercenary, to make some meager sum of money that she desperately needed. No one was going to hire a strange mercenary right after there had been a murder, much less two murders.

No, she decided, as she returned to the tavern where she was staying. Coop herself up in her room for one more night, then leave at dawn the next morning. Get far away from this town before the blame for the deaths falls on her, and hope that no one remembers that she was even there. She would have to seek work elsewhere, and hope that the smaller towns would have good coins and fewer Order guards. For now, she would rest. Rest and wait.
