A voyage across the sea is not an easy trip to make; but in the beginning, it is peaceful, calm, serene.... Everything is perfect. With bright colors of pinks, yellows, and greens below and warm sunlight bouncing off the crystal waves above, it seems a moonlit dream.

Sadness fills the humpback's heart, swelling with grief and anger. What were those creatures? With their long, shark teeth, they pierced the body of her newborn calf. She had him only for an hour. An hour!

As she swims on, tears roll down her enormous face. She would have to make the long journey—halfway across the world—back from icy cold-gripped waters into the tropical paradise she promised to her son—alone....

"Why? Why does this sadness well inside me? I want the ocean to know my sadness!" she sings, sings to the whole world. "Listen!" her voice booms, rising in anger and grief once more, then drops into a low whine. "Listen. Man has taken my only son, my only son...." It was her final year, she knew. She could go on no longer. She would go to the tropical paradise to join her boy forevermore....

Author's Notes

This story is about a humpback, traveling a long way to tropical waters, what should be a paradise. She should be with her son, but poachers have taken her last child from her, for it his her final year of her life. So she makes the long journey to paradise alone.

I've loved animals and anything about the ocean for as long as I can remember. When I came to learn about stories like this, it brought me nothing but pain, as I'm sure it does you to read this short, but emotional story. The reason I wrote this story was because I wanted to remember my passion to want to help animals and hopefully make the oceans a true paradise for both humans and marine life for generations to come.
