They kind of are trying to quit, though. Not everything, but cigarettes on their own seem kind of pointless to keep up as a habit, even if they do like the scratchy tone it lends to their vocals. They go through this every year and all that happens is that they get grouchy as fuck for a few weeks before they buy their next pack.

“Man, I fucking hate working on Candleblight.” Belial scuffs their shoe against the ground, dragging their steps behind them.

“Not so bad,” Malachi drawls. “Candleblight shows go harder than any other.” Puff of a cigarette, then he holds it out to them expectantly.

Belial waves him off. “Nah, man. Tryna quit.”

Quit?” Malachi cackles like a fucking hyena, high pitched and screamy. “Fuck, never joke with me like that again.” Nonetheless, he withdraws his offer, perching the cigarette between his lips.

They glare enviously as Malachi stubs out his cigarette on the wall before chucking it over his shoulder, only half smoked.

“Rather be partying right now.” Belial loves shows, but they’ve never had the chance to just enjoy Candleblight before, dressed up and high in the sky like a balloon about to pop. Plus, they know Zay’s bound to have something going on.

“What, you wanna ditch?” Malachi’s eyes flash with feverish excitement.

Maybe. “Nah.” They’ve got to be at the venue in half an hour. If they’re lucky, they’ll make it within two, but their fans are used to them being late. It’s part of the scene. Besides, they know they’ll be pumped as fuck when they’re on the stage.

It’s not like them to feel like this. Like they’re missing out on something when their life now is more than anything they ever could have dreamed of before. They told themselves they’d stop making sacrifices when they got here and they were fine with it before, but now that there’s Zay…

Things change. Not always for the better. It’s dumb as fuck to want to be hanging out with your loved ones on a holiday. Belial doesn’t love Zay.

But they’d give almost anything to see his face in the crowd that night.

“What you thinking about?” Malachi, coarse as grit.

“Nothing.”

“Aight. I got some stuff that could boost you up.”

After that, Belial doesn’t think about anything at all.
