Something Wrong
After a sporting event at their school, Scrap and Eve share a very monumental moment together.
Something Wrong
Year: 6046
The crowd had begun to disperse. There had been a big sporting event at Sky high school in East Eroid. It had been a huge deal – so many people attended that it was really chaotic for everyone watching. The school bleachers were littered with trash that people had left behind, and one or two unlucky janitors were taking their sweet time slowly cleaning it all up.
It was okay, though – it was a lot easier to deal with once everyone had left. Almost everyone had left, anyway. There were a few students lingering around after the game ended, chatting with friends in the cool spring night air. Some of the people that remained however were two specific students, sitting in the middle row of the school bleachers with snacks. One being a squeakitty named Eve with a bag of Wuffles chips and two empty bottles of Coke King; the other was a paper-faced cat-dog named Scrap with pretzel sticks and Spite soda.
Eve dug her hand into her chip bag, stuffing her face and speaking with her mouth full.
Scrap really only knew what squeak was saying because he heard it in her head. He also heard her append internally,
Red glitter spread over his mask as his complexion reddened under it. He was… aware for a while now that his feelings were reciprocated, but he couldn't say anything.
The idea of telling a girl how he felt was such an alien concept to him. He'd never been in a relationship, largely because he felt like nobody would want to be with him if they knew what he was capable of doing. And he didn't exactly want to lie. Especially not to someone who was in love with him, that he loved back… but here he was, lying to Eve. Yes, it was true, he had been in love with Eve since the day they met, as cheesy and typical as that sounds.
That day that he'd been walking in the hallway with his notebooks under his arms and also quite cheesily laying eyes on Eve, proceeding to stumble and drop all of them. The notebooks contained spare faces – and it may have been a bit symbolic for the way his emotions just kind of spilled everywhere all at once. He had gotten Eve's attention – the squeakitty did not laugh at him the way others in the hallway were laughing.
This… wasn't entirely a lie. He did only have one eye, being an ESPer – not saying it was "wrong" necessarily though. He was trying to chalk it up as insecurity about something else, when in actuality he was just trying to keep people from knowing what he was.
Eve smiled at him. It was a genuine smile. Not one that Scrap was really used to having directed at him – usually it was just laughter from people being mean to him. But this wasn't that. This was something else. And it stayed with him for a long, long time.
He had pushed back his feelings for a good while because of Eve's issues with her now-ex girlfriend Beth… and honestly, he had pretty much decided he would never try to get involved with Eve in that way. Eve had been hurt a lot, and he never really wanted to risk contributing to that… so he was never going to say anything. But that all changed. Because Eve had started to reciprocate. He heard her internal battles over it – not wanting to like him...
...and sometimes it hurt a little more than most people's negative thoughts about him… but he was seeing that Eve had started to lose to those thoughts.
They sat together for a while, chatting about little things, just kind of hanging out… but things would get interrupted suddenly when Eve's attention was stolen by something not so great. Scrap didn't have time to warn her by the time he could hear their thoughts – a certain beagle was walking with two of her friends on the ground in front of the bleachers, seemingly passing by, but Beth and Eve noticed each other.
Beth halted, standing there with narrowed eyes, looking almost huffy at the sight of her ex and that obnoxious friend of hers that she thought manipulated Eve into turning against her.
Eve tensed up, and she leapt to her feet and jumped to Scrap's defense, clenching her fists.
It was interesting that she was so much more willing to stick up to Beth when it was him being hurt and not herself.
Eve was so furious that she stood up and looked as if squeak was gonna run down there and fight Beth. Scrap pulled on her hand.
Eve didn’t want to listen, but she knew Scrap was probably right, and she slowly slumped back into her seat, looking away from Beth. Beth rolled her eyes and she and her friends continued walking, leaving Eve and Scrap alone.
Eve got quiet suddenly, but her silence meant nothing to an ESPer.
Scrap listened to her internal dialogue, feeling a little bit awkward as he usually did when hearing people thinking about him. He just knew that was so private, he shouldn’t be hearing that. But he couldn’t control it.
Eve lowered her head, blushing softly.
Scrap’s heart started to race. He knew. He knew what she was going to say, and he didn’t think he was ready. He didn’t think being with her would be right if she didn’t know what he was…
More racing. He never had been in this situation before.
Eve’s eyes widened, and she turned really red.
Eve was stunned, not even fully processing what she was hearing at first.
WHAT THE FUCK?!
Eve stood up and grabbed one of the empty cans and threw it at him, then one of the bags, basically anything in reach.
Scrap panicked, and leapt to his feet and ran away, down the aisle and down the stairs off the bleachers. Eve obviously followed, rushing after him, and they ran out onto the field. Scrap eventually stopped and turned around, hands raised, backing away, as Eve slowed and started to stalk towards him, very huffy and angry.
Eve looked at him, unable to believe it.
…y-you… you really mean that?
Eve had tears in her eyes, and she immediately ran over and hugged him, burying her face in his chest.
Eve kissed him on his mask, but when she pulled away, it was smeared a little.
With that, Eve reached out and lifted up Scrap's mask and kissed him directly on the lips, stunning him, for he had never felt such a thing before.
After several moments, she pulled back, then looked at his face, and lowered his mask again.
