In the beginning, it existed. It was not reality, but rather the narrative by which reality for the universe operated. It was the meta, and the meta was it.

It is known as the Ancestor (roughly translated) to the last seven horrorterrors left in existence. Originally one massive eldritch being of unknown origin spanning multiple universes, the Ancestor’s ageless existence caused it to constantly struggle against the decay and aging process normally part of many universes. As its anatomy was spread across multiple realities, its biological systems couldn’t keep up with this and its body begin to necrotize. To save itself from extinction entirely, it split into many beings of different minds and bodies, scattered across the stars. Most did not survive the process. Some of the living offspring faded away into space dust and obscurity in the far corners of space. Many waged war against each other out of misplaced anger and avarice, conflicted on how to combine resources or perceived territory regarding their food source. But after the dust settled, seeing how little was left the remaining seven in that corner of reality chose to share, despairing over their lost kin. Attempts were made to contact any lasting of their kind, but all were fruitless. They were assumed to be the final ones.

This was how the universes of humans & trolls became interlinked and manipulated to become the cattle of horrorterrorkind. Their collective suffering a source of constant entertainment, and when it was over, the souls to be absorbed en masse as a fuel source for the beings responsible for puppeteering them to their deaths. For many of these two races’ own millennium, the last of the horrorterrors survived.

But it was not to last.

As they began to develop and mature into beings of considerable size and power much like their predecessor, the collective amount of food needed to fuel them all far outstripped what the universes they could reach could provide without completely eliminating everything in existence, dooming them either to a slow or a fast starvation. They debated for hundreds of years as they rationed and scraped ekes to barely live. Finally, they made an agreed decision. A plan to manipulate the trolls to achieve interdimensional travel and funnel resources to the horrorterrors to increase their influence enough to reach other universes, eventually interconnecting them in a brutal food chain. As they’d long ago set the trappings of a caste-based society known for its brutality, violence, and greed ruled by a dictatorship in trolls, it was more prime for usage than humans. As humans had scattered leadership with little unity, lesser technology than trolls had achieved with biomechanics, and overall less sturdy physique, it made them less ideal then trolls.

They had never revealed themselves as much as they did to trolls or humans until to the Sovereign, the current dictator of trollkind. Only faint whispers to a select few ripe for a religion here or there, never a deal as large scale or important as this. They’d always been a myth of the mad, a figment of the imagination ignored by many and worshipped by few.

The Sovereign was visited in her dreams with murmurs of every vice known to man, and soon she began to listen. They communed to her, and a deal was made in due time. The Sovereign could rule and live eternally on Alternia through the collective powers of the horrorterrors, and in return she'd do their bidding. They did not reveal the motive or full scale of their plans to her, but it was not needed. The Sovereign was a covetous person who craved the power and wealth far beyond what her lifespan could contain, but with no further limits the consequences of such were gone.
