Three Blooms in the Garden

The nameless blue bloom stood all along by the side of the garden, in the shade. He had only been born moments ago, appearing like magic among the rows and rows of flowers, but sensing - instinctively - that those flowers were precious, he had waddled off to the side and hid in the shade of the walls which surrounded the garden. It was with much interest that he looked around, for this was the very first sight that met his fresh, newborn eyes. And what a sight that was!

The Dawn Garden, as he would later learn to call it, was - technically speaking - a greenhouse, the crystal dome protecting the precious flowers within being a necessary precaution agains the elements. But the black metal beams supporting the wide panels of transparent glass were woven to together with the same effortless artistry than a Spungus’s web. And among those beams, in the small nooks and crannies of the structure, stained shards of glass were encased, and then the light was cast through them they created  vivid and surprising colors on the flowers below. Colours, more colours clung to the walls in the shape of gorgeous frescos depicting strange and powerful-looking figures with benevolent faces; the nameless blue bloom would later learn that all of those used to be members of the ruling family, including figures that had been long forgotten. They seem to all follow one another, yet near the end one figure stood alone, as she was surrounded on both sides by a large empty space. She stood like a new beginning.

And, in fact, this was Queen Nouvel. But the nameless blue bloom did not know that yet.

As he stood there, taking in what seemed to be a wide and terrifying new world, something else happened that would startle him. A light that seemed to come from underground appeared in one of the flower beds, overtaking, if only for a moment, the light of the day as it illuminated the flowers from below. And then it emerged, and a it took shape, and slowly vanished, leaving a small purple bloom in its place.

The nameless blue bloom did not dare move, a little startled by the strange phenomenon. The other creature fluttered her eyes opened and slowly, if not shakily, stood to her feet. They had been born but minutes apart in the Dawn Garden.

He watched her. She didn’t notice him at first, even though she looked around, and her gaze seemed to be caught by the beautiful frescos all around the Garden, Nouvel in particular, that stood apart from all the figures.

The nameless blue bloom watched on. Until, eventually, he timidly took a step in her direction, then another, and as he advanced he felt his initial uneasy melt away. By the time he had reached her, he was bouncing around in the alleyways of the Garden, startling her a little, because he was a bloom and they had boundless energy to spend by wiggling all around the place.

Soon, she was joining him too, hopping around the Dawn Garden quite intensely. They avoided the flower beds but they ran in circles through the path, racing and jumping over one another.

Until something else happened that had them both stop dead in their tracks. A third bloom had appeared.

This one had wandered in, unsupervised, though one of the great gates in the wall of the garden. She had golden fluff on her entire body save for her face and her legs, a little black tail, and slender ears which marked her as a bloom of unicorn blood, but without their signature horn. But the two blooms had no way of knowing that.

She had followed a small bipedal creature into the dawn garden, one that sparkled and shimmered as if made of gold. It seemed interested in the flowers, and landed on one of them. Meanwhile, the golden bloom had shifted her attention to the two newborns, standing before them with her head raised high and her hooves held tightly together.

“Hello,” she said proudly. She nodded towards the little flower-loving creature. “This is Coin.”

Coin was a gnut, and she was presenting her pippet because she happened to also be nameless and had nothing else to present. But she, unlike the two others, knew that she would get a name when her parents would come and get her from Obrille. She was also informed, perhaps through some guard whispering to one another about her, that her family was quite important and prestigious, and so she believed herself to be quite important - and above the rules.

Which was why she was there even though she was not allowed back in the Dawn Garden. Although, to be fair, she had only been following her gnut.

The two other blooms watched her wordlessly. The purple one, younger than the blue by only two minutes, stood behind him, but she had her head down and her sharp little horns pointed towards the newcomer.

“You’re stupid,” said the golden bloom. “Haha! You don’t know how to talk!”

The blue bloom and the purple bloom did not understand the insult or the tone. They kept staring at her.

“Stupid,” repeated the golden bloom.

And then she went to go smell the flowers, which Coin was also exploring. She too felt that they were somehow important, which meant that she, at least, respected them enough to not step on them. Not that she respected much else, at her age.

The purple bloom was the first to react. She hopped past her companion and approached the golden bloom. Then, when she was ignored, she headbutted her.

“Ouch!” cried the golden bloom at the top of her lungs.

She hadn’t really been hurt, her golden fur had protected her, but she had learned that if she screamed a caretaker would come and defend her. Alas, as they were none, she showed some of her bad character and turned around with a glare on her face.

“Very stupid!” she cried. “Very stupid baby!”

She had, thankfully, not had the time to learn other insults in her short life.

However, although her screaming did not attract a caretaker, it picked the interested of another creature, which was always somewhere near the Dawn Garden to look over it. And she, that was its primary guardian, wondered who that could be, and hurried in through the gates left agape.
