Here's something I just wrote almost a year ago for a Creative Writing class. This was done as one of my exercises, but any excuse to show off one of my lesser know characters... eh, why not XD

On a bright sunny day, far from any main land, within the depths on the ocean waves, a humanoid being, one with a fish tail replacing it’s legs, seemed to be laying on a rocks. It was a mermaid, but on that looked bored out of her mind. Her arms folded on the rock as her head sat on top of her arms, her posture was a mix of relaxation, but also anxious, her light purple and teal colored tail and long straight hair simply swayed in the ocean currents. But her face wore this look, like there was nothing to do, and she couldn’t think of anything else to do.

After a long time of just listening to the movements in the water, she couldn’t take it anymore and yelled out, “WHAT CAN I EVEN DO TODAY?!” It sounded high-pitch and scared away any fishes that were remotely close to her. She then gave a defeated sigh as she went back to laying, there was nothing for her to do today, no practice with magic, no hanging out with family and friends because they were busy as well, no games to play as well. Even then, she’s been bored of games she’s played over and over, playing with the fishes has become same old same old, even exploring old ships became a drag after other merfolk stopped people from doing so.

All she could do is stare at the sun’s light piercing down onto the sand below. But then she looked up at the surface water’s surface, and got an idea. There were many remote islands around where they live, maybe a little rest on one of those would be an experience. Normally, they would be told not to go on them, but she there was nothing else to really do, so it was that idea, or just be glued to the rock, and she had enough of being on this algae covered surface.

She pushed herself off the rock to give her a headstart to the surface, swimming quite quickly towards it. In fact, too quickly, by the time she reached the surface, she actually ended up hopping several feet above the water. The sudden weightless feeling out of the water actually made her panic, failing her arms about until she splashed back into the ocean. She was in this dazed state, disbelieving that she was able to get herself that high out of the water, but she went slowly back up to poke her head out of the water, and as soon as she did so, she was practically amazed by the sight and the feeling.

The surface of the water was making little waves, making her slowly bob up and down as the sunlight made it shine like bright glitter. Above her was a blue sky, much more open and high up than she originally thought based on pictures she use to see. In the sky were scattered white, fluffy clouds. They moved across the sky at a slow pace, but didn’t look like much rain would fall, for a second she could of sworn to see a cloud in the shape of a fish, though as it moved along the shape ended up changing from where she was “standing”. The warmth of the sun beat down on her, it wasn’t one that could burn her like the aquatic volcanoes she got near in the past, but one that felt more relaxing as well as comforting. She hold up her hand, pretending to reach for the bright sun, only to feel the breeze against her being chilly, like a cold fall breeze suddenly showed up.

This new feeling was amazing to her, ecstatic even, but she wanted to try to still lay on a remote island. She scouted out for one, looking all about until she spotted one in the distance with some grass and palm trees. She swam quickly over there, not realizing that the sun was reaching the middle of the sky, and made close to the shore.. But then became a little unsure. The slope of the sandy beach made her less confident, since she would not be easily be able to get on and get off the shore. However, her fins hit the shore even though she swore she didn’t move, only realizing that the waves were pushing her towards the beach.

The waves pushed her to the point that her fins couldn’t move anymore, but they made her land to shore, but face first to her shock. She slowly pulled her face out of the sand, wiping the small pebbles off her face and mouth. Her tail soon felt dug slightly into the wet sand, the feeling was like loose clay against her scales. She just sighed at the feeling of getting stuck and turned her body to face the sky.

Keira then just watched the sky, seeing the clouds go by and seeing the sky slowly change in colors. She looked in awe as the once bright blue sky became a shade of orange,  a shade of orange she remembers seeing on some other mermaid tails, and on some coral she notices as she swims by, the waves going back and forth over her tail, like a blanket on a bed covering and uncovering someone’s legs, but the water helped keep her tail hydrated. The sky soon transitioned to a dark blue, as sparkling dots soon appeared above the now dark grey clouds. She was amazed by the beautiful sky.

But, she began to feel sleepy, and only realized how late it was when she saw the moon in the sky. She moved her body about and crawled back to the ocean. Once she could swim easily again, she bolted back home despite how dark it was now, the moonlight was the only thing illuminating the sea floor. It took a while but she managed to return back to her home, only to be greeted with concerned roommates. Tired, she said she would explain what happened tomorrow, as she yawned and head towards her room. She plopped straight on the bed and looked up at the ceiling, her mind wandered back to those colorful skies above the ocean, as a smiled appeared on her face before falling asleep.
