Plot Script (Rushed)

FADE TO:

EXT. BROKEN DOWN SNACK FALCON - DAY

LUCA is seen flipping over collapsed shelves. Picking up enclosed cans and shoveling any spilt over food into his mouth. The air is dry and so are his hands. The echo of the footsteps of FELIX and his family can be heard outside of the Snack Falcon looking for help. 

GIRL

(Shouting)

Help! Please we need help!

Luca stays silent and moves more slowly and carefully, to avoid the group. His movements shifted as the air shifted as well, he blended into his surroundings, allowing him to stay hidden within the environment. 

BOY

(Shouting)

Please, my dad is injured and we don't have any resources.

A scream of a young girl is heard from FAE, Felix's sister; morphed blacks of humanoid creatures surround Felix and his family. Luca looks out of a broken window at the group. There's a sense of hesitation, he doesn’t want to offer help but the pain staking cries of agony are too much on him. If he has ignored it now, it would be on his conscience for however long he had left to live. 

Sighing, Luca hustles over to the group wielding a small screwdriver and rips into the monsters. Jabing the weapon into their heads and down into their torsos. 

FAE

Hey look at him, he's here to save us!

FELIX

Sure seems like it.

Luca makes an opening towards the group and reaches out to Felix. The brief breaths they exchanged while looking at each other both sent signs of fear.

LUCA

Hold onto the others.

Felix grabs Fae's arm as she grips onto RICK’s jacket. Luca wrangles out the group and retreats back to the Snack Flacon.

FAE

Thank you, stranger.

Luca stays silent. RICK can now be seen bleeding from his arm by Luca and seemingly cut off at the elbow. Luca shuffles away from him in fear. Fae looks at Rick and back at Luca.

FAE

Oh no no no. Don't worry he hasn't morphed. At least he shouldn't have, we cut off his arm when one of them got into his skin.

Luca's eyes perk up and his eyes soften for a moment. Skeptical, he still takes out a wrap of gauze and hands it to Felix.

FELIX

Thank you.

Felix begins wrapping his father's arm which stops the bleeding.

LUCA

Is that all you need?

FELIX

What? No, no we still need your help he’s still bleeding look at him!

LUCA

I have no time for this. I can not help you and me.

FELIX

You can't leave me.

LUCA

Why?

FELIX

I have food! And… And you don't.

LUCA

I do not need your charity.

FELIX

What is your problem? I'm trying to help you so you can help me. My dad is injured. My sister and I can't carry him on our own and defend ourselves. You clearly know how to protect yourself but you're just being selfish right now. You don't care about anyone but yourself. That's probably why you're all alone!

LUCA

How do you know, you still have family to care about. I have nobody so why should I care! I just met you. Why should I protect you? I need to get to the rescue station all the way across the city. I can not bring yours as well!

FELIX

So why did you do it?

LUCA

What?

FELIX

Why did you rescue us?

Beat

LUCA

It was painful to sit back and listen to her screams.

Luca points his finger at Fae, still looking at Felix as he talks.

Beat

Suddenly a second horde of blackened creatures crawl out the depths of the crevasses of the ground, almost sludge like.

LUCA

Fine. Come quick.

Luca and the group traverse through the broken down rubble of the city, down into a parking lot complex where we see Luca's base.

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. PARKING LOT COMPLEX - AFTERNOON

Luca opens up a broken into car, filled with supplies. Luca dumps his bag of newly found food and takes out a bottle of pills and peroxide. He hands them over to Felix.

FELIX

I'm not pouring this on dad.

FAE

Fine. Then I will.

Fae rips up a part of her shirt to use as a wet rag and tends to her fathers wounds. Luca wanders off to a corner of the parking lot and eats a small canned meal. Felix follows after.

FELIX

Thank you for taking us in. I know you didn't want to and-

LUCA

I didn't do it for you.

FELIX

Then who did you do it for? Yourself?

LUCA

Yes.

Beat.

FELIX

I see.

Beat.

FELIX

I'm still grateful regardless.

LUCA

You shouldn't be. I'm not a good person. I don't know why you can't see that.

FELIX

I think you're alright. I don't think you're as bad as you think you are.

LUCA

I don't understand.

FELIX

I've seen you before. You probably don't remember much but before this whole thing happened. We went to the same school, I admired you a lot. Started from afar and yearned to be with you.

Beat.

FELIX

Be with you. Be. Be friends with you that's all because you were all alone you know?

LUCA

I suppose.

Beat.

LUCA

I'm going to go check on them. 

Luca leaves to go back to his car base. Felix grumbles in embarrassment. Shortly Felix joins back with them. The extra supplies not taken with LUCA were picked up by Felix, Fae, and Rick. The group sets off towards the rescue base. 

FADE TO:

Montage of Luca and his group looking for supplies until through the search of a local small shop they run into someone. The person sees Luca and back at the group. Luca is cautious while the man and Felix look relaxed. The man seems friendly. He smiles, never dropping it and always keeping his hands behind his back. There's an eerie friendliness to him. A living and breathing paradox.

MAN

Luca, my friend, found some others to join with I see.

LUCA

I didn't realize that "The Vultures" expanded this far, in such a short time too.

MAN

Why yes, it's wonderful what a group of people can do. Speaking of, is this your new band of adventures?

LUCA

I'm just bringing them along.

FAE

We're sticking together until we get to the station!

MAN

Ah yes, that station. You know only a select few can be rescued at a time, you'd have to get there with speed and luck. Perhaps a group may be of assistance?

FAE

Oh sure thing! That sounds wonderful, Luca!

LUCA

I don't think it's a good idea, Wyatt.

WYATT

Now why is that I haven't offended you in any way during this interaction have I? 

Felix notices Luca's especially dismissive behavior and joins along. 

FELIX

Luca has been reliable. I don't think we'll benefit much from "The Vultures".

WYATT

Oh sure, the guy is dependable but how well do you even know him? Would he sacrifice his life for your own?

Beat.

WYATT

My offer still stands if you want to join us. We have plenty of food and supplies, especially to tend to the big guy's wounds.

RICK

I think the best course of action would be to at least give them a shot.

LUCA

I don't think that's a very good idea. At all.

RICK

You haven't given me a reason to back up your suspicion.

Silence. Luca, although only knowing the family for a short period of time, has grown a strong attachment to them and feels as if he needs to protect them. However, he doesn't have the courage to say the crimes of The Vultures in front of WYATT, the deputy of the group.

RICK

Silence says a lot. We're a group so we stay together and we could get to that rescue station for whatever it takes. 

WYATT

'Righty then, follow me and I'll lead you to our little camp.

Luca gives a look to Felix, one of concern and fear. Wyatt quickly turns around with a bright grin, and walks off expecting the group to follow behind him. Rick beckons the group to follow. Felix and Luca trudge behind.

FADE TO: 

EXT. VULTURE'S NEST - EVENING

Overview of a scrap yard, bustling with people. Farms are set up along with tall walls made of cement and rusted cars. Scrap metal houses are built in stories. Tall towers are made, acting as watchtowers for the camp. Men with armor and guns patrol the inside and outside of the camp. Wyatt calls up to the large scrap metal gates.

WYATT

Hey! Your deputy has returned!

The large metal gates started to creek open. Two GUARDS emerge as they push at the gates to open and let the group in. 

GUARD

Hey, welcome to the nest! I’m sure Wyatt is recruiting you all? Ah, a friendly face I see. Hasn’t been very long has it, LUCA? I thought you wanted out of this place.

LUCA

I changed my mind.

Luca bumps into the GUARD and pushes past him.

GUARD

Still as friendly as usual. 

MAN

Well, well, well. What do we have here? The lone crow came back to a group of vultures, eh?

LUCA

It’s not like that. I didn't come back for you. It’s for them.

MAN

Oh now we're being selfless eh? Didn't have enough heart for your ol' pal Marcus?

MARCUS and Felix lock eyes. The two hold a tense stare, one filled with jealousy and the other with disdain. Marcus then shares a look with Wyatt, somehow without saying a word, the two are on the same page.

MARCUS

We still have daylight to burn, my friend, why don't we use it efficiently

The group was split into two, Fae and Rick are sent to chop wood and gather resources and Luca and Felix were sent into a large group to cut down the remaining monsters within the area.

FELIX

How much longer?

LUCA

Three more days until the next rescue team. The Vultures said they'd prioritize us.

Silence.

Morning arose as the four got back to work. Luca and Felix have been separated for the first time since their meeting. Felix was trapped with Marcus. Fae and Luca are organizing food and rationing food.

FAE

So, my brother.

LUCA

Yes, I am aware of him.

FAE

He cares for you a lot. 

LUCA

I am also aware.

FAE

It’s hard for him to put his feelings into words. He might seem harsh but he's a nice kid. And I know he cares for you a whole lot.

LUCA

I don't understand why you’re telling me all of this. 

FAE

Maybe I don't have anything to worry about. You're perhaps just as or more so blunt than him.

The air was tense. As most would feel when placed together with Luca, he has an intense stare with a mumbling dowry voice. He seems disinterested but is he really? Nobody really took the  time to know him other than Felix. The two boys worked well together, being so similar. The world seemed to be against them both but at least they had each other.

CUT TO:

EXT. VULTURE’S NEST - MORNING

MARCUS

So, you have a fascination with Luca huh?

FELIX

What? I don't understand what you’re even saying.

MARCUS

I know that you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Beat

MARCUS

Fine, be ignorant but just so you know that boy is selfish. He will never do anything for you. His trauma, his baggage, it's all too much for him and most definitely you as well. 

FELIX

Luca has been a great help to both me and my family. Thank you very much.

MARCUS

That crow has been a burden on everyone. Making his round to all of our officers and trying to mingle with him. He ruined our rankings and he’ll do the same and mess with your own family.

FELIX

He has done nothing to me. I love him and nothing you say can change that. I have already devoted my life to him. I expect nothing from him. Luca simply being alive makes me so happy I can't believe that the man I’ve been in love with for years is finally within my grasp. You can not take this away from me.

MARCUS

Do as you please.

The last day passed, it was time to group up the remaining survivors in order to get saved.

WYATT

Morning sleepies! Time for your big day to be. As promised you'll get to see the beaut' of a rescue boat. 

Wyatt takes the group outside where a group of 25 follow. Marcus is within the escort as well with 3 more well armed guards. The small band of people reach the shore. 

MARCUS

It was good seeing you again one last time. 

RESCUE CREW MEMBER

Remember, we can only take 25 people at a time…

LUCA

Did you know about this? I know you’ve done this before. I bet you planned this out, didn’t you?

Monsters start to rise from the ocean waters. Roaring as they creep onto shore.

WYATT

These big rescue boats are loud. Those things love sound you know. Always good to bring bait along. We have to protect our own, you see. Sadly, LUCA isn't one of our own anymore. In fact, he betrayed us first! I just had to return the favor.

MARCUS

I just wanted to come watch. See you get what was coming to you, my little crow. I do not believe you have much time left either.

Luca is taken by the neck by Marcus. He is brought elsewhere on a different part of the shore. Felix and his family are left to fend off the guards themselves. The boat opens its doors for the refugees to board the boat, there isn't much time left.

Rick swings his arm around with all of his might, leaving one of the guards passed out on the ground. Felix shoves the remaining guards towards the creatures and runs towards the beach shore. Luca is nowhere to be seen.

MARCUS

What are you waiting for? Luca is gone. He is no longer with us at this time.

FELIX

No, we had so much time. How could you kill him off so easily? 

MARCUS

Oh you must be mistaken, he is still alive. Just not here. Wyatt is having a wonderful chat with him in that cave. I'm sure he's having the time of his life right now, they were awfully close you know. 

The large figures emerge from the shore and make their way near Felix and his group. They stand ready to fend them off until Marcus, Wyatt, and other guards shove the group into the grasps of the monsters. Felix's body gets flung into the arms of the horrid figures, he is positioned where he can not escape.

FELIX

Help! Please help me.

CUT TO:

INT. SEASIDE CAVE - DAY

Luca is currently tied up within the depths of the cave. He struggles to escape. The darkness starts to enclose around him and he grows faint. The only light is coming from the entrance of the cave. Luca shuffles around on the cavern floor. The echoes of hopelessness is the only sound he can hear. 

WYATT

Should have just never left. 

Wyatt walks out of the entrance of the cave, Luca struggles to wiggle out of the restraints. Until he hears his dear friend's voice. Luca slows and realizes there's a small pocket knife in his shoe, always kept in for emergencies such as these. He reaches in his shoe and pulls out the edged weapon and begins to chip away at the rope. He escapes and sprints towards Felix. Quickly he gets in between the monster and Felix. Separating the boy from the black sludge. Luca begins to be merging with the sludge.

FELIX

(Shouting)

What are you doing? We need to get out together, you can’t just play hero now damn it!

It's too late, Luca is already inside of the monster, he’s being engulfed within the creature. There is no escape from his death.

LUCA

(Silent and shouting)

Thank you, for believing in me.

His voice was muddled. His drowning voice couldn’t reach the outside. He wanted to reach out to Felix. He screamed until he could feel his lung burn. The burn soothed when the black liquid seeped into his lungs. He couldn't breathe, he couldn't speak. He was gone. 

Felix and his family were able to break free. Luca is nowhere to be seen. He is gone. Felix starts to cry but there's no time. The Vultures are still after them and they want them dead. Rick grabs Fae and Felix by their collars and rushes them over to the rescue boat. 

FELIX

(Crying)

Thank you for saving us.

The rescue boat starts to head to the rescue base as the remaining Vulture members are left at the shore, blocked from reaching Felix and his family. Felix looks off into the city that he once explored with Luca. The boat drives off.
