The city was settled, dusk hanging over the buildings like a cloud. The park was empty except for two figures, who sat on a bench, watching the pond water ripple. They weren’t leaning on each other, but their arms touched, sitting in silence that said so much. A comfortable quiet.

“We should head home, shouldn’t we?” One of the girls said. Her hair fell in thick waves past her shoulders, her head tilted back at the sky, watching stars slowly appear.
“Yeah.” The other girl said. She had straight light brunette hair, brushing her shoulders.

Neither of them moved. The sky got darker.

Finally, the first one moved. She stood up, stretching, then extending a hand for the other. They both stood up and started walking down a cracked and broken concrete path. A song broke through the quiet, and one of them pulled out a phone, tucking her short hair behind her ear and holding it up.

“Hey mom.”

The other girl raised an eyebrow.

“No, I’m with OC.”

“Yes, she knows.”
“Mom, I can’t do this right now, okay? I don’t feel good.”
“Don’t do that. Just use Maddy.”
Maddy hung up the phone, glancing at OC with a tired face. OC offered a smile, and Maddy tilted her head, smiling back.

They walked back to Maddy’s house as the sky fell. They laid in her room, looking at the random assortment of things on her ceiling and walls. Suddenly, Maddy sat up, her nose scrunched up, as if she’d smelt something bad.
“OC, I’m sick of this.” She stated, standing up. OC rubbed her forehead and nodded.
“Spill it, just be quiet, I have a headache.”
“I have advil.” Maddy suggested. OC shook her head.
“Anyways, you know that me and my mom are…” She fell silent, her eyes narrowed in concentration.

OC nodded. She knew what Maddy meant.

Suddenly, Maddy reached for her phone, which had been playing quiet music. She scrolled through contacts and aggressively clicked the screen. She put it on speakerphone and set it down, wrapping herself in a blanket.
“Hello?”

Maddy froze.
“Sorry mom, didn’t mean to call you.”
She hung up quickly. Maddy looked at OC, eyes filled with feelings that she couldn’t put into words. OC drifted over, wrapping her arms around Maddy.
She knew what she was saying.
