He was two days late…

He knew she didn’t like the unknown, or at the very least being left in the dark on these kinds of things.

Perla’s mind swirled with dark thoughts as her nails dug into her skin, she was so angry that hot tears were threatening to fall from her eyes.

So wrapped up in her thoughts, Perla didn’t hear the wooden door open, the creaking that it created didn’t even startle her from her spiraling thoughts.

“Perla? I’m sorry I’m late… I’m home”

But the voice that meekly spoke did.

She wanted so badly to turn around, so badly to start screaming and crying at him, asking where he was and what had kept him, but she had enough. He had done this too many times to her, and although she knew it was something that happened, she just wished he’d send her a letter or something alerting her to his lateness.

“Perla?” Asra’s soft voice was near her, but she still refused to look at him.

Even as he put a soft, yet calloused hand on her shoulder, the touch making her melt a little inside, she still refused to look at him.

Instead, to keep herself from failing the task she had set for herself, she abruptly got up and quietly left to her room, leaving a confused Asra behind.

It had been hard. Extremely hard to do what she had just done, but he had to know that this wasn’t acceptable anymore and that he wasn’t going to be forgiven so quickly.

Asra, knew this. He knew he had screwed up one time too many, she was forgiving but even then, she too had her limits. Instead of pushing the matter, he decided it was best to leave her for the night and beg for her forgiveness tomorrow.

Asra awoke early, as he always did. The silence of the early morning was normally calming, but his anxiousness of the events of last night weren’t so easily calmed.

Not wanting his worrying thoughts to engulf him whole, he quietly stepped out of bed, Faust nowhere to be seen, likely having slithered into Perla’s room after having sided with her.

Since he didn’t have to maneuver around the adorable snake, it didn’t take him long to get dressed and ready.

He had to prove himself worthy of Perla, and although words are nice, actions always were better.

Quietly, he exited the house and set off towards the bazaar.

Pumpkin bread, she liked that.

The streets were quiet with the only busy people being the shop venders who were getting ready for the busy day ahead of them.

Spotting her favorite place, he nervously approached the baker his money in hand.

When the baker spotted him, his eyebrows shot up before he shook his head and let out a laugh.

“You should stop getting in trouble.” The baker spoke in a jolly manner. Amused by Asra’s screw up.

“Yeah… Can I get a loaf of pumpkin bread?” Asra responded as he set down the money needed. He either got this as a gift for her when he felt she needed some cheering up, or as a way of asking for forgiveness. It was pretty obvious which scenario he was getting it for whenever he stopped at the stall.

It didn’t take too long for the bread to bake, and with a loaf in his hands, he started on his trek back home.

Along the way a colorful flower stand that he’d never seen before caught his eye. The people who were operating it looked like they came from elsewhere. The flowers they brought with them were exotic and beautiful.

Turning on his heel, he approached them and grabbed a few flowers, paying them before hurrying on home knowing that he only had a little more time to get everything in place.

Perla awoke feeling tired and sad. Being angry drained her of all her energy which is why she hated being angry.

Moving her hand slightly, she felt something warm and scaly next to her. Faust being alerted to her waking, lifted her front half up slightly and began swaying happily.

“Morning Faust” Perla said as she kissed the snake on the nose before pushing the covers aside and getting out of bed.

Her tiredness caused her to despise the sun. She just wanted to slip back under the covers and go back to sleep.

It took a moment, but she somehow summoned the energy to open her bedroom door and when she did, the smell of pumpkin bread greeted her.

She felt her heart do a little summersault in her chest as it began to beat a bit faster. She loved pumpkin bread, she knew this was what he always did.

As she entered the kitchen, she noticed how many flowers had been decoratively placed all over the place. A messily made flower crown sitting beside a slice of pumpkin bread and some delicious looking sweets.

He had ramped up his game.

He must’ve seen how angry she was at him.

Warm arms slithered around her waist as a warm body pressed against hers.

“I know you’re angry at me. You have every right to be. I cannot say much, but the places I’m going to don’t allow for me to always contact you. Even though I would love to write you a letter every day it could put me and you in danger.” Asra whispered into Perla’s ear causing a shiver to run down her spine.

“All I ask is for some patience. Once my job is finished, I’ll have something special set up for you.”

“I forgive you… But this is the last time. I trust in you, I do. So please just maybe overestimate how long you’re going to be staying?” Perla spoke almost quietly. She felt vulnerable, but that was okay with Asra. Though he screwed up, he was someone she felt she could trust.

“I will.” Asra responded warmly.

And in her lover’s arms, with the smell of exotic flowers permeating through the air.

Perla knew that even if he was to do it again, she would forgive him.

Because she was in love,

And love made everyone foolish.
