Magic
What's it all about? (This is a heavy WIP, and is mainly a concept/idea that I came up with, so it's definitely subject to change!)
What is it?
Magic is what some consider a supernatural force. It allows many to do what is considered impossible to those unaware. Magic can let you control light or fire, turn invisible, or even fly, but it does have it's limits.
What can't it do?
Magic cannot:
- Truly revive/bring people back from the dead. Reviving people can only be achieved through dark magics, and even then those people will come back as rotting husks which are usually used as soldiers.
- Permanently change the genetic and/or molecular structure of a being permanently. This can only be achieved through dark magics. For example, someone may want to change their gender, and this is possible through magic. However, the change will not be permanent, and will only last until the given mana runs out.
- Things like immortality are an "exception." However, this is because they do not permanently alter the genetic and molecular structure, but rather, prevent it from changing.
- Help an unable learn magic, however there are certain exceptions.
Who can learn magic?
When it comes to learning magic, there's two types of people, able and unable. Able also has two sub-categories, which are called specialists and generalists.
Able
As the name implies, an able is someone who is able to learn magic. Ables are not born with magic, and may never end up learning it. However, the opportunity is there.
Ables may have to undergo a ritual before they are able to learn magic, or they may be born with the ability to use it.
- Generalists
A generalist is someone who is able to learn general magic. Elemental, or any other type, they can learn it. Generalists in terms of magical power are usually quite weaker than specialists, but they do tend to have larger mana pools.
- Specialists
A specialist is someone who is born with specific powers often unique to only them. Specialists in terms of magical power are usually quite stronger than generalists, but they tend to have a difficult time learning general magics. Often times, specialists develop new powers or have their old ones "evolve" sometime throughout their life.
Unable
As the name implies, an unable is someone unable to learn magic under most/all circumstances.
What is mana?
Mana is the extent that you can cast spells/use magic without needing to recharge. For example, if you had a pool of water, or in this case mana, each spell you used would drain some water from the pool. (Some cost more than others.) However, if you ran out of water, you could no longer cast spells. Attempting to cast spells with no or very little mana is very dangerous and can lead to a backfire, causing injury to yourself or those around you, and/or magical exhaustion.
Types of Magic
Conditions & Other Info
- Magicial exhaustion
Magicial exhaustion is magic caused exhaustion. Along with other symptoms of exhaustion, magical exhaustion can increase your risk of a backfire, increase the amount of mana drained from your pool (to decrease strain), and in some cases, even lead to death. This condition is especially dangerous to magical creatures. If you are suffering from this condition, the best thing to do is rest and use little to no magic at all times. If you can, move to an area restores mana.
