Figures that the train had to be delayed again cupcake thought just my luck. The small sheep was tired and weary and had been looking forward to seeing her beloved wife Calliope after a long day in town. Of course her short lived dream was crushed when her train back home, back to Cal, had been delayed due to unforeseen weather problems, namely a lightning storm, and by the time the problem was fixed it was nine at night, by the time she arrived back at the station it was far past eleven and more than a little dark and cold. Cupcake shivered, drawing her green jacket close to her wool, feeling it compress against her skin. She shivered again feeling it go right down her spine and reached into her jacket pocket by her tummy, feeling the soft warm inside of the jacket for her phone, a small cold, hard, metal block. Cal hadn’t called her back yet; the home line was probably dead because of the lightning. So she texted Cal via mobile, but she didn’t reply. Oh well thought Cupcake, sighing as she looked around her nervously might as well head home and the little sheep entered the dark woods that would lead to her home.

The woods were darker than Cupcake remembered, the trees taller, the shadows deeper, and with more and more small sounds that made her freeze. She breathed deeply, it was only a short walk to the house after all, she’d be home in no time, right? More sounds, Cupcake jumped repeatedly as though doing a silly dance. She needed Cal, I mean who knows what could be right next to me she turned her head, staring at the shadows, holding her hands close to her chest, perhaps I should wait at the station she decides, nodding to herself she turns around and makes the walk back, still wrapped tightly in her hoodie.

Tch Cupcakes ear twitched, tch was something there?, tch it was louder, tch, Cupcake freezes, tch it came from right next to her. Cupcake turned her head, curiosity and fear getting the better of her, at first she saw nothing, just the trees still covered in shadows, as though they were children wrapped in a black blanket getting ready for bed. Tch her ears twitched towards the sound, they pointed down. Cupcakes eyes, followed them, and a gasp escaped from her mouth. It growled, a grazed look in its eyes, it was small but seemed menacing it looked as though it had a pair of dentures in its mouth, the small fox had fur like fire, eyes like dark beetles and a smile like a psychopath, the gasp quickly turned into a scream but the small sheep wouldn’t, couldn’t, move. Tch. Again from the fox was it clicking its tongue behind that menacing smile? She closed her eyes tightly and breathed shallow and fast breathes, holding her head in her hands looking down, feeling her wool against her hands helped, but this was bad, bad, bad, bad, ba…

“Cupcake!” an exited, and loud, voice rang. Cupcake could’ve sworn she jumped a whole metre back.

Calliope looked down upon her tiny soulmate, she was shaking, her eyes were closed tightly, and her breathing was rapid. Had Cal scared her again? “Hey Cupcake..” she spoke quieter this time, “it’s okay it’s just me, Cal.” The little sheep opened one eye and then the other, her eyes lighting up upon seeing her beloved. But then she stared at the floor of the woods, seemingly worried. “Cupcake? What is it?”

“Hmmm?” Cupcake looked up, seemingly leaving her trance, “Oh, nothing, just… I… don’t really know.”

The large cat gave her wife a big long hug, sniffing her scent and patting her wool, “There, there, you can tell me at the house okay?” and the small sheep nodded, accepting Cal’s hand and leaving the fox, wherever it was, behind her.

“So what were you so scared about?” Cal asked her wife later on in the house. They were sitting in the small dining room, with simple dinner salads in front of them. The air smelled of fresh sawdust. The feeling of heat flowed from the fireplace, and the company they were both in was the best they could ever feel.

“Well…” Cupcake muttered “There was this thing,” Cal offered no comment just stayed quiet and nodded, egging her to continue, “I think it was a fox, but it had… it had… human teeth…”

“So?”

“Hmmm?”

Cal stood up, walked over and kneeled beside the small sheep. “Clearly it was some stray cat that had dental problems and loved dying their hair.”

Cupcake let out a little laugh and smiled. And the two spent the rest of the night coming up with bizarre and ridiculous ideas as to what it was.
