A dump of headcanons explaining the intricacies of August and Ame's relationship. Mostly for my own reference, but since i don't explain it that much in either of their bios, thought i'd upload this. May add more as i develop them.

Reasons That Ame and August Love Each Other

August

  • didn’t have a friend his own age until Ame
  • they both suffer under September, and Ame voices his indignation and fury at August’s treatment, how all of his emotions are valid and understandable and what is happening/has happened to him isn’t right. Ame is one of the only creatures who has acknowledged, validated, and listened to August’s worries/anxiety/feelings genuinely. The only one who stuck out their own leg willingly and vehemently for August’s wellbeing – often at the risk of their own.
  • August had dealt with feelings of worthlessness so deep and ingrained his whole life that he didn’t really even realize he had them until Ame came along. Ame was the first to make him truly feel worth something, feel important and loved. Feel like, if he disappeared the next day, he would be missed.
  •  Ame stuck around because they liked him as an individual, loved him and enjoyed his presence in their life. Ame could have left, easily, but chose not to because he knew it would be so much worse for August if he did, and he didn't want that. After agreeing to stay, they both very easily could have had a cold, professional master and servant relationship – just as September crafted it to be – but neither of them had wanted that and had actively fought against it, forcing September to meet them halfway so that either of them would cooperate with her.
  • Ame’s ever upbeat and bubbly attitude certainly helped with his own bleak outlook on things. Ame helps him to stop and consider the brighter side of things instead of dwelling in what sucks. Ame’s silly antics also helped August ignore/escape the more traumatic and stressful aspects of living amongst the Valencias.

Ame

  • to be entirely honest, Ame had not planned to love August as much as he does – had not predicted that that would happen in the slightest.
  • It had grown gradually, his love for August. Softly and quietly building up with each interaction they shared. The way a hesitant smile bloomed on August’s face, surprised and excited when Ame asked about what he was reading, what he was writing. The way August pouted and grumbled at Ame’s antics and teasing. The way he often mumbled his thoughts aloud when he thought he was alone and ushered stray bugs back outside with gentle paws. Ame was naturally a reserved individual, they knew that – but the longer they spent around August, the more their walls came down for him. Ame was a sturdy dam built of stones, and a pebble slipped free for every day spent in August’s presence. They fell, one after another, unnoticeable at first. But after August stayed with them through nights where their body ached so much with September’s training that they couldn’t sleep, after he kept them company silently on days when being alone was more painful than any physical wound, after they were drowning in their own thoughts of uncertainty and pointlessness and numbness and August held them through it, dragged them out of it – with a frightening suddenality, they realized the dam had broken. The dam, steadily leaking with water, had shattered and washed away entirely – as if it had never been there all, and they hadn’t even noticed. Ame’s life had become so entrenched and intertwined with August’s that the thought of existing without him was unfathomable. Was impossible. Was horrifying. And although it was undeniable that many parts of his life wouldn’t be as painful or difficult had he not come to the Valencias – if it meant not having August in his life, he would make the same choice 100 times over again.
  • Probably also unconsciously latched onto August, since the time he met him was so stressful/uncertain/jarring to Ame – August served as an anchor of peace within the storm.
  • August also treated him differently than most regarding him being a storm spirit. Many of the Valencias saw storm spirits as otherworldly beings, not to be trusted and not on the same wavelength or even “sentience” as the common creature. They were rare, mythical beings usually only seen in legends and stories – so Ame was treated the same. As a novelty. Not as an individual with thoughts and feelings like any other creature. While August still treated him with a certain amount of awe and hesitance for a while, it was rooted from simple curiosity, not disdain or fear. Because while August had heard the rumors and tall tales that painted storm spirits in a negative light, he had also stumbled across countless actual factual information about storm spirits in the many hours he spent in the Valencia libraries. Although some of his questions may have been accidentally insensitive at times simply due to ignorance, they were never inherently malicious or ill intentioned. And even then, once August realized Ame was a kid just like him, he treated him as such.
