Yolkpaw scented the air, pulling in the various scents of the forest and the shore. Although he's a medicine cat apprentice, Cloverflame wanted to test his abilities and try to have him find obscure herbs that he hid early. Faintly, the young tom found the scent of his mentor and followed it. The trail was faint and soon it led him to a dead end. Yolkpaw frowned and parted his mouth, drinking in the scents again. The bush in front of him didn't have any herbs, but the fact that the scent trail stopped here was suspicious. He leaned closer.

Within the branches, on the ground, was a large sycamore leaf covering a mound. Yolkpaw parted the branches and pulled it out with a claw, dragging out death berries. He quickly wiped his claws on the ground and tried to get rid of the poison, knowing that this was a trick from Cloverflame. Yolkpaw remembered that his mentor specifically asked for leaves, and these sycamore tree leaves were useless for cats. He turned away from the bush and scented the air, but it was masked by the poison from the death berries.

Getting frustrated, Yolkpaw wrinkled his nose and snorted. Closing his eyes, he tried to remember all of the familiar scents in the den and focused on them as he went in alphabetical order. Alder... no. Burdock... no. Catmint... yes! Recognition struck, and his eyes flashed into the trees. Another little trick! The catmint was still technically in the sycamore leaves, but not on the ground as anyone would expect. Yolkpaw shot into the tree and stood on a branch, sniffing each of the large, green leaves. One of them was dripping with honey.

Yolkpaw pulled the leaf off of the branch and turned it over, finding the catmint. He grinned and put it in his mouth, not caring that the honey was dripping onto his fur. He headed down the tree and sprinted back into camp, eager to show Cloverflame.
