RoM: A Starling Turn of Events

Hidenka's blue eyes scanned the park for her friend. The puma centaur was lying on a bear fur she had laying out on the ground beneath a large deciduous tree whose bright green leaves shivered at the slight breathe of the early afternoon. The lake shimmered in the light only disturbed by a single boat, but it was a motorboat and created powerful ripples across the blue surface as it raced past with a child screaming in delight, pulled behind on an inflatable tube.
Caelas held completely still as if he knew his handler was taking in the scenery of the beautiful summer day. He turned his head slowly to look at the creature in his shadow. He had known his share of fluffy tokotas, but one so small was new to him. Her head tilted upward to look at him. Brehna's black face was half hidden beneath off-white bangs that caused Caelas to wonder if she was looking at him, or at something else. Her face and the paint resembling a shade of red stood out against her light coat, the paint on her muzzle and chest, the placement of the paint on her chest reminded him of a robin.
Sayen lifted her head from her work, Hidenka could not quite make out what she was working on, though it clearly involved some sort of fabric or skin. Blue eyes looked for her friends tokota, wondering who had tagged along, as Caelas trotted down the hill towards the half human figure. Kinana has seen them coming and was hiding behind a tree, her head peaking out just enough to watch the group with her brown eyes shimmering with curiosity and wonder. Her eyes focused on the small fluffy figure next to Caelas, following along like a little white shadow. Small and fluffy but moving with pure confidence and strength, something Kinana lacked.

"You finally made it!" Sayen moved over to make room for Hidenka on the fur.
"Sorry about that, I almost forgot the food." Hidenka slid the saddle from Caelas back and placed it on the ground next to the fur, closer to the trunk of the tree. Caelas shook now that he was free of the saddle and he found a spot in the shade to lay down in.
"Who is that?" Sayen leaned over to look at the toki who chose to lay down behind Sakari on the corner on the bear fur. Behna leaned over just enough to see Sayen, almost matching the movements of the handler. "She is so cute!" Sayen was grinning from ear to ear and trying to motion the toki over to no success, but she was too comfortable to move closer to the toki.
"This is Brehna, I've been asked to look after her for a while, so I thought I would bring her along." She looked from Sayen to Brehna and ran her hand through her thick fur. Kinana was creeping her way closer, closing the gap between her and the toki. Her tail was wagging as she shimmied her way forward on her elbows, belly dragging across the ground. Caelas lifted his head as he saw her, and Brehna saw him perk up. The toki turned her head to be face to face with the much larger female tokota giving her a puppy dog look and wagging her tail, her chin plastered to the ground. Brehna batted Kinana on the nose, making the larger female jump back in surprise and sit to rub her nose with her paw, going cross-eyed as she tried to see if something was on her nose.

Introductions between the two were cut short as a loud commotion took over the calm park. All the visitors in the park jumped up, screamed, or were spooked by the sudden event. Caelas was up and growling before Sayen and Hidenka could figure out what was going on. Eyes turned to the water where the boat had flipped. Only one person could be seen coughing and clinging to the flipped boat. The inflatable tube had gone flying and ended up on the beach, the rider was luckily not on it when it hit land. Panic ensued as people searched for the family that had been yelling and playing joyfully on the water.
Brehna ran for the water, Caelas taking her example and following without hesitation. The two leaped into the waves created by the crash and dived beneath the surface. Kinana tried to be brave and raced after them but stalled at the water's edge. Sayen and Hidenka raced to the water's edge, preparing to help the tokotas if needed in removing the injured from the lake.
"Someone go get help!" Hidenka yelled at the crowd, many of them frozen in place as they watched the scene unfold.
"Kinana!" Sayen called to her tokota as she jumped in the water, following the other two, surprised she would be brave enough to jump in let alone after seeing the crash.
One head popped up, gasping for breathe and coughing. The woman then looked around frantically. Kinana swam over to her first. The tokota was unsure what to do at first, poking and nudging at the woman. She tried to grab at her shirt but soon found the woman clinging to her mane, so she started to swim for land.
Brehna and Caelas swam deeper into the lake. Brehna was weighed down by her thick fur, swimming more slowly then the larger tokota. Caelas flew past Brehna in comparison, aiming for the small figure that was sinking ever deeper into the lake. He reached hold and grabbed the back of his shorts, preventing him from sinking further, but the other older boy was much deeper down. Caelas pushed the boy towards Brehna and let go, hoping he had gained enough momentum to send the boy closer to the toki and the surface before he took off after the other boy. Brehna positioned herself beneath the boy, and swam against the weight of her fur towards the surface.

"My children, where are my boys?!" The woman was panicked as Sayen helped her the rest of the way to the shore once she reached the shallow portion of the beach.
"Calm down, we'll find your boys. Please sit down." Hidenka tried to calm the woman, wrapping her in the blanket she had brought but had not pulled out since Sayen brought her bear fur. They led her to the fur and got her seated, trying to keep her calm. Kinana turned and started bounding back into the water, heading out towards the boat and the man clinging to it.
Brehna appeared, her paws racing in a frantic doggy paddle to reach the shore. Sayen stayed with the woman as Hidenka raced to the water's edge and lifted the boy from Brehna's back. The toki was panting as she followed Hidenka onto the grass where she laid the boy down. She started to perform CPR, trying to get him to breathe. Caelas broke the surface, the other boy hanging from his back.
"Does anyone else know CPR?! We need help!" A young man rushed to the other tokota, pulling the boy down from his back. Kinana was making her way back to the shore, the man clinging to her mane and wishing she would move more quickly.
"My boys! I need to see my boys!" The woman begged, but Sayen kept her from leaving the shadow of the tree.
"You need to give them room. They'll better be able to help if they have room." Sayen tried to reason with her. Caelas sat next to Brehna, watching nervously. Both were breathing heavily after having held their breathes for so long. Kinana reached the shore with the man, helping him make his way across the beach and onto the grass. He leaned heavily on the tokota.
"He's breathing, he's breathing!" The younger boy coughed and sputtered. The man pushed himself off of Kinana's shoulder and stumbled forward, taking his boy in his arms as a few other park visitors raced to bring blankets and towels. The older boy soon coughed and sputtered as well.
"Just breathe. Focus on breathing and coughing." The young man rubbed the boys back and wrapped him in a blanket that had been handed to him. The woman raced to their sides, wrapped her arms around her boy and crying.

Hidenka took a step back and was joined by Sayen.
"My heart is still racing." Hidenka commented, then she turned to the tokotas sitting behind them, soaking wet and breathing heavily.
"Good girl Kinana! I never imagined you'd jump in!" Sayen wrapped her arms around the tokota. She did not care if she got wet, she was proud of her usually cowardly tokota.
"You two as well. Good work you two!" Hidenka patted Caelas on the neck and then leaned down to pet Brehna, running her hand through the now soaked fur of the toki. "You are going to need a good brushing when we get back." She commented, trying to untangle some of the knots.
They waited around as everything in the park started to settle down and the family were given a ride into town. They allowed their tokotas to dry off in the sun, Brehna taking the longest with her thick fur. Caelas was watching the park intently as if something more was going to happen while Brehna and Kinana slept in the sun. Kinana had a huge grin on her face and her tail twitched happily from time to time, proud of herself. Hidenka and Sayen were quiet as the park cleared out, unsure what to say. So they listened to the water and wind, quieting their beating hearts.
