Abbey ran to her room, crying. Her parents were fighting again and she couldn't take it anymore.

"Why couldn't they just love each other? "The eight-year-old girl tried to wipe her tears, as she cuddled her soft teddy, but it was to no avail, the tears just kept coming. She clutched her stuffed bear even tighter. He was, after all, her only friend in this world. After another hour of shouting from downstairs, Abbey finally fell into a troubled sleep.

The girl woke up with a start and realized the sun wasn't up yet. It was still night. Why was she awake then? She listened for voices from downstairs, but everything was quiet. Her parents had stopped fighting. She smiled at that. However, her smile fell immediately, when she saw a weird creature standing in the corner of her room. Thanks to the streetlights outside, she could make out the features of the foreign creature. It looked like a big fox, a while snout with a yellow upper body, which also had red and purple parts. Her backside was quite the opposite, it was pitch black. But what stood out the most, were the creature’s eyes, they were a beautiful glowing purple.

Abbey didn't know what to do, she let out a squeal, scooted back on her bed and rubbed her eyes to make sure she was not dreaming. She looked again and nope; it was still there. Just as she was about to scream, the creature spoke: “Do not be afraid of me, I mean no harm.” It said calmly.

“Who are you and why are you here?” Abbey asked, still a bit scared.

The creature just smiled at the girl. “My name is Minky, I am the legendary creature of the magical realm. As for the reason I am here, you summoned me, well your heart did.”

That got the little girl a bit confused. She summoned it? She didn´t remember doing such thing.

“What do you mean I summoned you? Until now I didn´t even know creatures like you existed in the real world.” She asked while clutching her teddy to her chest.

“You are right.” Minky replied “I am not from this world. I came here, because your pure heart called out to me. I want to take you with me to the magical realm.” The creature finished.

Abbey couldn´t believe what she was hearing. An escape from her current life sounded great, her parents didn't really care about her, so nobody would miss her and she would finally be happy. Despite her unease the girl stood up and walked towards Minky her hand stretched out to touch the creature. Abbey stroked Minky´s furry head and said:

“Please take me with you.”

The magical creature didn't need to be told twice. She summoned her powers and in the blink of an eye both of then were sucked into another realm, the magical realm.

Abbey was feeling absolutely surreal as she opened her eyes. She was no longer in her bedroom and it was no longer night. The sun shone brightly down on them. The little girl twirled around and took in her surroundings. This realm really deserved its name, it was simply magical.

There were birdlike creatures flying around them, curious of the newcomer, their multicolored wings flapping in the air. This world was so much more colorful than what Abbey was used to. Everything was just a lot brighter and made the girl feel safe and happy. Now joining the birds were little blue, green and pink fairies, whizzing past the girl, giggling. She was enthralled and really glad that she chose to leave with Minky. Her smile was the brightest it had been in years, as she looked at Minky. “Thank you so much for bringing me here.” The girl said thankfully.

“No need to thank me, my child. It was your pure heart, that brought you here. Now come with me, I'll show you around your new world and then you can meet the other children who were brought here.” Abbey jumped with joy, she couldn´t wait to explore this new world with Minky.

They walked until the sun started to go down. All the while talking about the places Minky was showing the girl. From the magical forest with its brightly colored trees and inhabitants, to the bluest of seas right behind it. On their way, they met a lot of creatures, some big and some really small, but all of them very beautiful and magical.

Abbey and Minky were nearing the place where all the children from Abbey´s old world were living. The loud screams of joy were heard from far away. Finally, they reached a clearing and, in the distance, Abbey could see kids her age, older and younger running around between huts made out of wood, enjoying the last sunrays. That was not the only thing the girl realized, there were creatures like Minky, lounging around, looking at the kids play or even playing with them. Abbey questioningly looked at Minky.

“Our kind really likes to bring joy.” Minky answered the unsaid question.

Right at that moment the two of them were spotted by the horde of children and all activity halted as the attention was drawn to Abbey. The questioning glances quickly turned into joy, as the kids ran towards Abbey and Minky, some of them even hugging Abbey. One particular blond girl, about Abbey´s age, stood out to her.

“Hi, I'm Reese” she beamed. “You're new right? Yes of course you´re new, Minky always brings the new ones. You look really nice. Can we be friends?” The bubbly girl asked.

Abbey was so shocked, that someone wanted to be her friend and she just nodded her and watched as Reese smiled at her. She smiled right back. Right at this moment Abbey knew, that her new life in the magical realm would be absolutely amazing.
