❛❛I don’t want it.❜❜

An older Magma grunt blinked in both surprise and disbelief, hand holding a pokéball still outstretched and hovering in front of the younger boy’s face.

❛❛I’m… I’m sorry?❜❜ she stuttered, obviously confused. Most newer grunts were usually overjoyed to receive a pokémon of their own, but this one wasn’t having it. ❛❛All new members are required to have either a zubat, poochyena, or koffing. I am sorry, but I don’t make the rules. Take it.❜❜

The boy scrunched his nose up at the pokéball and he stalled momentarily before swiping it out of the older woman’s hand with distaste. He really, really didn’t want this one.

Sighing, the other grunt decided it was best not to converse any further and simply gave him an XS uniform before turning on her heel with a slight eye-roll of annoyance and making her leave. Kiyung eyed the ball over for a moment, and decided right then and there exactly what he was going to do.

Making sure no-one was watching, he released his zubat from it’s confines and took it outside the Magma base. Placing his hands on his hips, he gave the poor thing a horribly stern look and pointed to the nearby woods.

❛❛You. You are leaving.❜❜

The zubat gave him a clear look of confusion. Ki decided it was best if he made himself clearer, despite the zubat’s previous excitement for finally being paired with a trainer.

❛❛I am releasing you. I don’t want you. I do want the pokéball but I can’t be using it if you are in it!❜❜

Upset, the zubat gave him a whine in protest. Kiyung felt a slight twinge of pity and let out a long sigh, ❛❛okay fine. I will find you again later, okay? I just want to get a pokémon that is fancy and different to everybody else. I will come and get you once I can buy my own pokéballs.❜❜

The bat’s wings drooped, but it still nodded in understanding regardless. It felt inferior with the boy hinting towards his annoyingly common species being a norm within the team, but the thought that he could be his partner later down the track was enough to keep it’s hope.

❛❛I do promise, okay?❜❜

With that, the zubat nodded sadly and took flight - breaking it’s connections with the pokéball in Ki’s hand. The boy didn’t feel any guilt, and was already moving towards the woods himself in search of a new companion.
