The night was warm, as Lune huddled up next to her partners in between the covers. She wasn't sure what time it was when a noise woke her up.
She opened her eyes, which quickly adjusted to the darkness. She could hear a vibrating noise coming from the bedside table, and watched as Colress felt around in the dark for his phone.

"...Hello?" he said in a hushed voice, before pausing to hear the other end speak. Lune could hear muffled noises from the other end before it fell silent. Once the noises ceased, Colress rubbed his eyes.
"Alright, hold on, you just woke me up. I'm still in bed."

Colress lifted himself up off the bed and moved through the bedroom as quietly as he could to the door. He opened it, and exited into the living room, leaving the door open just a crack.
Lune tried to fall back asleep, but she could hear the soft, muffled hum of Colress's voice from the over room as he talked on the phone. She had no idea how N was sleeping through this, but she did her best as to not disturb him as she got up from the bed herself. Lune crept over to the door, and peered out the crack.

"Is there any indication when she'll be out of the hospital?"
...
"Wait, you're there right now?"
...
"I see. Do you want me to fly over? It won't be too much trouble."
...
"Alright, if you say so. Keep me updated in the morning. Love you mom."
Beep.

Colress sighed and rubbed his face in his hands. As Lune watched, she leaned forwards a bit too much and found herself falling forwards. She grabbed the door to catch herself, but in doing so it made a noise. Colress suddenly perked up and looked over.

"Hello...?" he said, shifting himself on the couch to get a closer look.
Lune decided she come clean, and shuffled though the crack in the door.
"Oh. It's you. Sorry I woke you up."

"It's fine - it's my fault that I was nosy." Lune said as she stepped towards the couch, arms crossed casually. "That was your mom?"

"Yeah." Colress sighed. "Alexis is... in the hospital."

"What happened-?! Is she gonna be okay?"

"Apparently she fell from the second story of the Dreamyard... she broke her leg really badly and probably has a concussion. I was really worried something like this would happen one day..."

"Colress, that's awful. But knowing Alexis, she'll probably make a smooth recovery."

Bzzt. Colress's phone buzzed. It was a text from his mother. He opened it, and Lune leaned in to look at his screen. It was a photo text, and the picture was of Alexis. She was laying in a hospital bed with her leg suspended, and she was looking towards the camera with a thumbs-up and a smile. The picture elicited a small laugh through the nose from Colress, who quickly replied to his mother.
'Glad she's taking it well.

Colress sighed once more and put his phone down on the coffee table.

"I wish my mom wouldn't have woken me up in the middle of the night, but that's how my family is, I guess."

My family...
Lune didn't respond, and was lost in thought. Colress noticed her silence and spoke up.

"Lulu? You alright?"

"Yeah, I..." Lune's words trailed off. "Was thinking about family."

"You wanna talk about it?"

"No, I... think I just need to sit here with my thoughts."

"That's alright. I'll sit here with you."

Did Lune have a solid family?

She had her birth family - a mother and 3 siblings. The details were muddy, since it was so long ago, but Lune remembered playing around with her siblings in the sun. She didn't even know that humans existed back then. What she could remember was the fire - the frantic scampering through burning trees, desperate calling out to her mother...
She didn't want to think about it.

She had her human mother, Hana, who took her in after she was exiled from N's castle. To Lune, Hana was her true mother - she cared for her through thick and thin for those 6 years they were together, despite how difficult and different Lune was. But as of late, Lune's contact with Hana had been... spotty. She'd forgotten to call more than enough. She felt bad.
She didn't want to think about it.

Then there was her second mother - who's name Lune still got mixed up. Was it Carol or Karen? She could never remember. She saved Lune's life and saw her at her lowest, but Lune was never particularly close to her.
She didn't want to think about it.

Ever since she had been introduced to Colress's family, these jealous pangs would come and go - what was it like to have a family?

"Lulu... Lulu...? Are you sure your okay?" Colress spoke as he twirled Lune's hair. Lune snapped back to reality, and realized her eyes were teary - and Colress must've noticed.
She decided it'd be best to explain.

Lune muddled over her words, and realized halfway through that she was crying - but Colress still nodded along in understanding. By the time Lune was finished explaining her thought process to Colress, she had grabbed a tissue box and was trying her best to clear the tears from her eyes.

"Oh Lune..." he said, his voice soft and understanding.
"You're viewing it too narrowly. I..." he paused. "...had a friend. Her family was awful to her, and she told me about a similar feeling that you had... but then she explained to me the bigger picture."

"The bigger picture?" Lune asked.

"You're not alone Lune - you have me and N, first and foremost. But you also have Cheren, Bianca, and Hana as you mentioned... you grew with these people and they make you feel safe, right?"

"...I suppose."

"Then I feel like that's family. They'll always be here for you, and you know N and myself will too. Family doesn't have to be a mother or a sister or whatever - it can be anyone. That's the wisdom my friend passed on to me."

No words were said by Lune - she just sat up and hugged Colress until she was ready to speak.

"I guess your friend was right... I do feel at home here. It feels like I belong here."

The two hugged for a few moments before agreeing to go back to sleep. N was still fast asleep, and the two cuddled up next to him.

Maybe I'll call mom in the morning; Lune thought.
