they buy special charms (Moonstone and Pearl charms, they are symbols of love and fertility.) that they hang around the house and some charms they can wear. It isn't the amount of charms that they own, it is the quality and amount of love they share. They have to take them to the town's magic shop where the designated sorceress can enchant the charms. In order to do so, each pony must give up a physical possession that they value (a stuffed animal, a favourite shirt, a necklace) and have the sorceress burn them. 

The charms are rolled in the ashes and put on to strings and rope with other assorted charms for other types of luck. Pairs that do this together are usually successful and have a foal together. Twins are not uncommon.
