August 2020 Thunderstorm

Oh the season of storms; a dividing time of the year among many kebs, strangers and friends alike. There were the ones that liked to stand outside and splash around in all the puddles; those that liked nothing more than to stay at home and cuddle up with a good book; those that spent the majority of the day staring out the window and moping around; and then there was the odd one, that one person that didn’t seem to really care about the weather either way, whether it was sunny or raining an entire ocean. There are of course other outliers in rainy day behavior, but this isn’t an essay, so we won’t get into that right now.

It’s safe to say that the three morons sitting inside their shared room were the type to hole themselves up in their room and promptly vow to not get anything productive done for the day, an almost self-appointed day off from their already relaxed daily activities. Whether it was just a light drizzle or a gushing downpour, Delta and Eliot both could be found lounging around with a good book or five, content in the knowledge that one day they will be blind as all heck. Do not fear though, Ray also shall soon be blinded by his choice in activity considering he refuses to sit any further away than 3 feet from the television screen. With a controller in hand like that all day too, let me introduce my friend ‘carpal tunnel syndrome’ sir.

This trio is usually quite lost in their own worlds, whether it be that of a famous and gifted poet, a fascinating biography or equally entertaining encyclopedia - someone help him, or a nice retro fighting game. An occasional exclamation or shout of success from Ray’s corner of the room will snap the other two out of their own personal trance, momentarily irritating them before they inevitably get sucked back into whatever they were doing, at least until Ray yet again makes some sort of distracting noise.

This trend will continue for some time until either Delta or Eliot finally snaps and tackles the loud fish-tailed keb to the ground. The two kebs involved in this rather pathetic scuffle will then make noise loud enough to be heard throughout most of the quiet rooms in the Seaside Library, therefore effectively disturbing literally everyone else in the building.

Now this is something that they are usually able to get away with relatively scot-free, with the exception of a few eye-rolls and some chuckles from other residents the following day. Other times though, oh boy, other times they are met with the looming figure of Callum(another scholar)’s  brother. Aspen is unlike his brother in many ways; not only is he more open to confrontation, he’s got a wide mouth that he’s not afraid to use to intimidate. While this nice combination of height, aggressiveness, and toothy malice would typically be very intimidating indeed, with his older brother there to hold him back they all know that Aspen is more bark than bite - though Delta will still cower behind Ray and Eliot, tail wrapped around himself. Ah yes, intimidating, that is until the thunder sounds again and Aspen’s eyes go wide, tail drooping and ears folding back a bit as he does his best not to lose his composure before the brothers are back in Callum’s room which is fortunately on the same floor - hey, he’s got a reputation to uphold, the last thing he wants is for it to get ruined by the weather.

Once they’re back in Callum’s room, Aspen will curl up in his fort of blankets and pillows, cheeks red in embarrassment as his older brother either studies or puts on a movie for the both of them to watch - usually a horror or sci-fi genre. Why someone would want to watch something scary while also trying to distract themself from something that they are already afraid of is a complete mystery to many. They’ll pop some nice big bags of popcorn and pour an obscene amount of butter and salt on them - very healthy indeed.

These two cuties are definitely similar to Delta, Eliot, and Ray, in that their entire day is spent inside doing little-to-nothing during thunderstorms. Though watch out for them come the day after, for some of that time was most likely spent planning some sort of epic or devious prank - may or may not be based off of the movie they viewed, please pray for their next victim.
