September 2020 Crunchy Leaves - A Matter of Pride

There’s a crisp breeze rustling through the leaves, the only noise apart from the crunching of leaves underfoot as a trio makes their way through the brush. Shrubbery and plants alike part as they force their way through the thick foliage, not at all graceful in their advance. Were they hunting absolutely anything, even something that was hard of hearing, rest assured it would’ve escaped. Fortunately for everyone involved, this was no hunting expedition at least not in the normal sense. If anything, they were hunting for pure, unadulterated FUN.

Ray, of course, was the leader of the party, glad to be the one blindly plowing through undergrowth with no care in the world. Delta followed along close behind, by now very used to his best friend’s impulsivity. Eliot, ever the most level-headed of the three trailed begrudgingly along behind the other two, though he’d much rather be sitting indoors and reading a good poem.

Ray halts suddenly, ears perking up in excitement as he spots an assortment of nice yellow and red leaves. They’re scattered around the forest floor, just waiting to be organized into piles. The blue kebanzu races forward and gestures eagerly to the leaves.

“Guys look, there’s plenty of leaves here for us to use!”

Delta approaches with a smile on his face, leaving Eliot to be the one to roll his eyes at their childish antics. They all begin to gather the leaves into one area, attempting to make a pile though multiple times Ray’s giant shark tail ends up knocking them over. It doesn’t take too long for them to be gathered - though it would’ve been faster if they hadn’t had to start again and again - and the three step back to look at the relatively giant pile of leaves they had amassed.

With little to no warning - though it’s not like the others weren’t expecting it already - Ray rushes forward and heaves his entire body at the pile, a big grin on his face the whole time. He lands with the sounds of crunching leaves, red and yellow foliage flying in just about every direction. He cackles as he rolls around in the remaining leaves, almost certainly having the time of his life. Delta covers his mouth with his paw as he laughs, and Eliot just shakes his head, smiling fondly.

A minute or so later, Ray emerges with bits of leaves stuck in his fur, “alright, so who’s next?”

Delta attempts to subtly point at Eliot, though it doesn’t escape unnoticed. Eliot just scoffs and shoves his brother on the shoulder. They once again begin to gather the leaves into a pile, this time with Ray being more conscious of his tail. It takes much less time the second time around and the three find themselves once again standing in front of their creation.

Delta backs up a few steps and nudges his brother forward with his snout. Eliot flushes at the thought of doing something so childish, but he also knows they’re not about to let him get away with not doing it, so he sighs and walks forward. He’s definitely not about to take a running leap into the leaves, that’s just simply asking too much, so he walks forward and stops at the edge of the leaves. Suddenly a large force from behind literally launches him head-first into the pile. He crashes into the thankfully soft heap of leaves and sputters in indignation.

Head poking up out of the stack, he squints his eyes and asks a very dry “why?”

Ray’s the closest, and undoubtedly the one who pushed him in the first place, his brother knows better than to do something like that to him. Delta’s holding back a laugh the best he can, but Ray’s very unabashedly smiling his stupid face off.

“Hey Ray,” Delta manages to choke out, “you should definitely run.”

The blue keb grins slyly and does just that, taking off in the direction that they had originally come from. Eliot stands up and quickly does his best to shake off the bits of leaves that have also gotten stuck in his fun, not failing to notice the leaves that were skewered on his back spines. He growls in irritation and begins running after Ray, not caring that such an action could also be considered childish. This was different, this wasn’t just jumping into a pile of leaves for grins like an idiot, this was a matter of revenger. This was a matter of pride.
