Chapter 1

As her eyes caught the glare of a morning sun rising over the mountains, Mesa pulled the sheets over her head and tried her best to shut it out. The warmth of her bed was all too inviting to even think of starting the day, but not even future queens can escape responsibilities at 6 in the morning. She sighed as she used all her willpower to drag her legs out from the pile of blankets. The chilling air almost made her snap them back straight away, but she'd already begun slipping off the mattress. Her powerful forelegs caught her weight as she finally emerged from the bed, and she wiped the sleep from her eyes.

Here she sat, in the middle of the castle's master suite, light filtered through the cracks of the velvet drapery barely illuminating the room for her to see. She stumbled towards the curtains and with one stretch of her forelegs, she parted them to allow the light to flood into the room. Gold embellishments glinted along the walls that reached towards the high ceilings. Mesa opened the glass doors and walked onto the terrace, the view revealing the grand mountains of the Peakwings territory. In the distance was Plighten, Glencloud, and Lakeview, the three cities neighboring the capital Solane. To the west, the never ending dunes of the Sandwing Kingdom glistened under the sun, and to the east steam rose over the marshes of the Mudwing kingdom.

Mesa reached her forelegs outwards and her wings flew open as she stretched everyone of her muscles. She let out a tired yawn and returned inside to assess herself in the mirror. Her thickly curled mane had to be well maintained, she grabbed the wooden brush lying on the stand beside her and began the tiresome job of grooming. Before long her stomach let out a harsh growl, breakfast was next on the agenda. Most dragons hunt for their meals, but when you live within the castle's walls there's really no need.

Sure, she appreciated the fine dining the trained chefs here provided, but she wouldn't mind hunting for herself now and then. It was easy when she was younger, no one would notice the princess slipping out into the mountains for a few hours, and it was always so fun. But she understood if that was all she had to complain about, she already had it better than most of Pyrriah.

Her ears perked up as a knock on the door brought an outside voice,
"Good morning Princess!" an overly enthusiastic voice chimed.
"Good morning to you too, Arthur" She reluctantly replied, trying her best to mirror his enthusiasm.
"You'll be pleased to know breakfast is awaiting you in the dining hall, would like to hear today's menu?" His voice sang through.
"No thank you Arthur, I'll be present shortly" Mesa called back dismissively as she dressed herself. She draped a blue robe over her hind, slipped five blue feathers into her mane like a crown, and finally put her earrings in. She gave herself one last look in
the mirror, and promptly headed out the door.

She gave a genuine smile to any staff she met along the way. Staff presence seemed to be tripled this morning and not a single dragon had time to stand around, as tomorrow was of course Mesa's coronation. The day had been long approaching, but she still couldn't grasp the concept that she was about to be made the ruler of the entire kingdom, which terrified her like nothing she'd ever known. Most princesses in Pyrriah spend their lives waiting for the day they can challenge their mother for the throne, but Mesas mother Queen Mineko was never ready to face her daughter in a battle to the death. It had been nearly a month since Queen Mineko disappeared, leaving behind only a note. It seemed like everyone in the kingdom grieved for her, but there was no part of Mesa that could feel anything for her mother. All she felt was numb. Their relationship was nearly nonexistent and she never got a clear reason why, even her father refused to talk about the subject. As the worries piled up in her mind she quickly lost focus of what she was doing, and nearly collided with a dragon polishing the floor.
"My apologies, your highness! Please forgive me, I should  have moved from your path" The dragon pleaded.
"No that's quite alright, it was foolish of me to have been so careless. Please, carry on" Mesa couldn't shake the feeling of shame for the rest of the walk.

Mesa spent the remainder of the day being pulled back and forth by various dragons asking for her approval of the final preparations.
"Would you like lilies or petunias to accompany the centerpieces?" "Do the seating arrangements meet with your approval?" "Do you prefer the Indigo or lilac serviettes?" "are the tables too close to the windows?"
It was like every dragon in Pyrriah needed her for something, and although she had been surrounded by dragons all day she had never felt so lonely. Even Arthur, who was always by her side couldn't spare a moment.

Before she knew it, the sun's last rays diffused into the night sky, now replaced with the light of three moons and a scatter of stars. The warm lights of the cities along the valley caught Mesas eyes as she once again looked out from her terrace. She couldn't help but feel like it was going to be a long night. She found herself pacing around the room, her mind was quickly flooding with countless anxieties of what tomorrow might bring. She was used to the spotlight, as the only child to the queen there was always attention following her, but this felt different. Tomorrow there wouldn't be a more important dragon to take the focus off her. She was being thrown right into the middle of everyone's gaze, and there was no way out. She shook her head as if to clear the swirling thoughts. I need a change of scenery, I'll lose my mind if I stay here any longer. She threw a bear pelt over her shoulders for extra warmth and took a running launch off the terrace. As her wings snapped open the air caught her and slowed the descent. The night air ran through her mane and it felt like no bad thoughts could reach her here. She tucked her wings back as she landed in a courtyard closer to the castle's entrance, the grass brushing against her talons as they made a 'thud'. This was one of the few places she knew she wouldn't be disturbed, and she already felt a bit better just being here. She subconsciously wandered along the path, mindlessly gazing around the flowers and shrubbery. The lanterns that hung from a canopy of vines above her flickered in the light breeze, she took a seat near an open fire and just watched the embers trail into the darkness. About half an hour passed before she was stirred by a noise. Footsteps nearby, but not close enough to see. Then a few minutes later, she heard them again much closer. She didn't feel like dealing with anymore dragons today, and just as she headed to take off, an unfamiliar voice called to her,
"Excuse me, I seem to be a bit turned around. Could you help me?"
