Bittersweet Nostalgia

“I wasn’t ready to say goodbye.”

Helgara hated having to admit it outloud by the sincere smile from her companion helped soothe the shame she felt saying the words. She cleared her throat and continued, eyes trained on the table between them. “And I know that if someone sees us here together then you might get in trouble-”

“Nobody else knows, you can stop worrying.” The man sat across from her interrupted her, his words meant to be reassuring. “As far as these men know, you’re simply an old friend of their general.”

Helgara barked out a laugh that lacked in humour. “Nobody remembers me, huh.”

“Would you prefer that they did?” Came the counter argument and she shot her companion a glare.

“Well it would be nice. I did a lot for the Legion, devoted half my life to them. It would be nice to have somebody recognise me.”

The general took a drink from his mug and sighed softly as he placed it down on the table again. “If they recognised you then we wouldn’t be able to keep talking, would we? I’d have to pretend that I didn’t recognise you.”

Helgara had no response to this and chose to just glare back at the general, who chuckled in response and placed his hand gently on hers. “You’ve always been passionate, I’ll give you that, but I wouldn’t accuse you of being logical.”

Like a child, Helgara stuck her tongue out at this accusation. “If you’re trying to butter me up then it’s not working. You don’t win a woman over by calling her an idiot.”

“I don’t need to butter you up, you already like me.”
