prologue

The plain girl. That’s what they call me. My name is Fern, but I guess it’s now “The Plain Girl” because I’ve been called that way more times than my real name. “Hey, Plain Girl, go run away!” they say to me as I walk down the hall. “Plain Girl, why do you even come here? You’re not special!” They’re always followed by laughter. Because they’re laughing at me. I run into the bathroom, tears streaming down my face. They do it every day. They think it’s funny that I cry before class every day. Because they can’t handle the fact that I’m different. They’re all the same. Not me. I’m different than all of them. They don’t know that. They never will. They think being different is a bad thing. It’s never happened to them. They can call me plain, but my real name is Fern, and I’m a rainbow.
