Work had been pretty tiresome, to say the least. The weather was awful and it seemed to be bringing out the worst in people. As just a contracted security guard, he could only do so much to combat the feisty tendencies being brought to light from the location at which he worked. With the location expanding and many off-site and even foreign visitors and employees alike coming in for extended stays, getting yelled at by disgruntled employees who were not accustomed to the way things worked here was happening more frequently. It stressed him out and he could feel something like old heart problems he'd had while a kid creeping back up on him.

Some days were better than others. As much as he enjoyed the cooler weather, he didn't like having to deal with those who thought the world revolved around them at work. At the very least, 3 employees (sometimes the same ones) would find an "excuse" to park in carpool parking or the visitor lot to avoid having to walk as far. Every time he would have to fake smile, offer an apology, and insist they move to the main employee lot as soon as possible. He disliked having to contact managers over the attitudes of the people under them as that tended to rustle more feathers and bristle more fur than needed, but at the same time, it was necessary. A lot of employees at this time of year would give him and the other security officers death glares and lay back their ears, but it was to be expected. Security wasn't hired to make things convenient and although he tried to be on good terms with as many as possible, there were some every once in a while that could make a day do a 180 and go from great to just plan awful.

Music and gaming were his escapes. He had several good friends he could rely on to help cheer him up after a bad day; a tiny and feisty hamster that could easily be a comedian and a fluffy albino dragon who had a habit of finishing Kiernan's sentences and vice versa, to name a couple. However, should none of them be available, he could easily start to de-stress by listening to some music. Tonight, that was his primary method.

After hanging his security uniform into the pile of dirty laundry next to the washing room, he belly flopped onto his bed. After inhaling deeply, he slowly exhaled and let himself lay there in silence for a few minutes before he stretched out his arm and blindly fumbled for his iPawd music player on the night stand next to his bed, face still buried in his sheets. His bedroom was decorated in a way that would make it obvious what he was into; posters of some of his favorite characters in some video games, and even some themed pillow sheets were all a testament to his hobbies. After he finally had a firm grip on his music player, he slowly dragged it in front of his head, eyes barely peering over the scrunched up parts in the sheets. He swiped through his music gallery, seemingly disinterested in most of the selection. With a sigh, he rolled over on his back and a laid the music player down on his chest, arms sprawled out, rhythmically twitching his feet as he pondered what to do. Suddenly, it was like a light bulb went off for him as he shot straight up, eyes wide, and exclaimed,

"CAKE!!"

Making a mad dash for his kitchen, he yanked open the utensils drawer, grabbed a fork, and spun on his heels, shutting the drawer with his hip as he went, and proceeded to slowly open the refrigerator door as though it was a sacred and delicate process. Inside was a vanilla frosting-topped cake with only a couple of pieces missing; layered rainbows decorated the inside of the cake. He had made a cake for himself two nights ago for his own birthday. He didn't have time to go out and do anything to celebrate it, but he wasn't going to let his unfortunatw work schedule keep him from making the best out of a situation. He'd had one piece yesterday before work called him in again after hours. Another piece was certainly due.

While he shuffled his big feet back to his bedroom, he grabbed his headphones from a desk on the way back. He did a much more careful hands-free bellyflop onto his bed this time, taking care to not dump the cake everywhere. By this point in time, some music had come up on shuffle that would definitely get him in the mood for the rest of the evening. It was from a band consisting of characters from one of his favorite games. He began slowly raising a leg and tapping it mid-air to the beat, a playful smirk coming to his face as he slowly eyed the moist cake out of the corner of his eye.

Cake made everything so much better. Whoever said it was a lie must have been crazy.
