Eiyla fled the store so quickly that she tripped on the stoop and ended up tumbling into the street. People gave her funny looks, but no one offered to help. Eiyla hurried away from the area. So much for her new job. Once again, her naivety had landed her in a bad situation. She hadn’t understood what her new boss was really selling in that shop. Honestly, She thought as she hobbled along. I should have known. How else could he have afforded such a big piece of land out here? Eiyla shook her head. Just because her girlfriend had a successful and legitimate business in the corruption region, didn’t mean every business was going to be above board.

Eiyla came to the edge of the town and set down on a mossy log. She examined her bloody knees. If Venus sees these, she’s going to go ballistic. Eiyla thought. Venus had been telling Eiyla to come work for her for weeks now. But Eiyla didn’t know anything about design or architecture and it didn’t really appeal to her. She had taken several online career choosing quizzes on Venus’ computer, but she kept getting conflicting results. Maybe she just didn’t have a passion. Who said every dextro had one big career goal?

Throughout adulthood, Eiyla felt she had held just about every job in the corruption region at some point or another. (Although she strayed away from the really dangerous and criminal professions.)

Eiyla sighed to herself, then began walking back towards home. If it wasn’t for Venus, she would consider getting cured and moving the heck out of here. This world was just too big and scary and complicated for her. The last several years had been a lot. Eiyla missed her parents. They were too wrapped up in themselves to care about their only daughter. Eiyla kicked a rock on the path. She didn’t want to start crying, not here, in front of all these indifferent strangers. She ducked into a small cafe that was relatively friendly. After ordering a cup of tea she turned her attention to the board of flyers by the door. A lot of what was up there was garbage. Blatant ads for sex or announcements for nothing, just random chatter by bored citizens. A new posting caught her eye.

Wealthy family sees competent cleaners. Call or apply in person.

Eiyla took the number strip off the flyer. Why not? She thought. Even I know how to dust.
