Participating Reoseans :

Koma 13459 / Iniko 13582

Ember 013 [Starter]

-Thedale/Fair-

Ember was not afraid of trying out even more games. The tiny chaser had already dashed to another booth, not even waiting for Koma to respond to Iniko’s question of wanting to do more.

The puller male rolled his eyes with a smile, and nodded to follow her. The genie marked vay had made her way to a larger stage. This one had tables full of various objects, and plenty of other reoseans standing around to get a good view of those participating. As the group approached, the ground shifted again with a rumble, and Iniko felt the warmth of his home. He had assumed it would fluctuate between all of the lands, but maybe it was only your perception of the place. The desert sands blew past, and yet even with the ground shifting, the items on the table stayed still, and no one else seemed to notice. Fascinating how magic worked.

 “Step right up! Take a gander at our game of chance!”

Ember was already on the stage, looking closely at all the items, and as if he was one of her guardians, Iniko stepped up beside her.

“We have some imps here playing pretend. Will you pick the real item, or will you get fooled instead?” The accouncer made an intriguing proposition, and Ember seemed stuck trying to decide what to do as she considered two feathers.

 “Well my fair companions, do you have an idea?” Iniko questioned the group, but his eyes landed on a pair of bracelets. Beautiful, with some gems studded in them, yet something about one of them seemed off. He squinted, and pondered what made them different while his companions considered their actions.

“Not yet, but these are beautiful! Look at the Gold!” Koma began, sounding thrilled. His eyes ran over all of the glistening trinkets, baubles, jewels but one of them especially caught his eye.

A set of matching earrings, glowing dimly and of a vibrant pumpkin color, reminiscent of old memories of someone he cherished deeply. He tried to pry his dark brown eyes away but it was as though they were glued to it.

“I can’t tell if this is a trick or if this could possibly be the imp. But… it’s like I’m lured to it.” He tried so hard to refocus but he felt magically beguiled by the item.

Each of them had an item in their view, for Ember, she had found a necklace with a gem amalgamated with smokey black swirls seeping into its deep scarlet colors. She was enthralled;

“Ohhhh, I can’t tell!” Ember’s ears pulled back. She started taking steps to the side back and forth while she tried to think things over.

The announcer cackled and a wide smile spread across their lips;

“Will you be lured to the correct ones?!” He nearly chanted with teasing.

“This is so hard, what do you think? Should we band together again and pick one together or choose one each and hope for the best?” Koma added, this time finally prying his eyes away from the baubles to connect stares with the tall sandstone puller’s jade eyes.

Iniko found his companions perplexed as they considered their items. He almost had his paw on which one was real, drawing on some of his more unsavory skills.

Ember had shown them up in the first round, and somewhat in the second as well, but it had been Koma’s sharp eyes that had found the item in the first place. It was his time to shine.

“I think we have this if you want to back my choice.” His smile spread wide as his eyes sparkled, and he gestured to the two bangles he was considering.

 “You see,” he started, and he kept his voice low so none of the onlookers would hear his reasoning, “the imps are tricky, but sometimes, they can’t quite copy everything exactly. Metal sparkles in the light, you see the shine moving back and forth across the smooth surfaces.

Sometimes things that are fake or imitation metal, well they won’t sparkle the same, their luster will be diminished. The same with gems, they might be more cloudy and not as clear. It takes a trained eye to notice that of course, so that’s sometimes a nice way to deter thieves. They’ll go for the fake things assuming they’re real, and yet the rest of your treasures would be safe.”

He wiped some sweat from his face, hoping it was just the weather from being back in the desert and not the stress. He knew this. Didn’t he? Swiping a paw across the table, he knocked one of the bangles to the side, and grabbed the one he was eyeing up as the light moved properly across the surface. The one he knocked to the side let out a soft ‘oof’, and Iniko let out a sigh of relief. A small one, and hopefully no one noticed as he held the jeweled bracelet in his paw.

"Knowing that, do you think you can do it?" He asked, grinning wide.

“Well well, color me impressed!” Koma retorted with a dazzling smile, clearly impressed.

Now it was up to Koma and Ember to each find a piece, with such good information, they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try and find one themselves.

Driven by that desire, Koma leaned back over the baubles and trinkets, tentatively looking over his choices again. Still, he couldn’t shake the feeling off of the set of earrings he was lured by earlier. The gems shone beautifully and even had a glow to it. Surely, like Iniko explained, an imp would have trouble mimicking this. He gulped quietly, this was more stressful than he anticipated and he wanted to impress too; he picked up the jeweled earrings carefully and winced.

When he opened his eyes again, the jewels were still intact and glistening in all their glamour. Excitement coursed through him and he skipped in place, flashing the item at Iniko with pure joy and pride.

As for Ember, her choice was harder. All the items started to make her feel dizzy.

“Ohhh, I can’t choose! Help me, boys!” She pleaded with big eyes and a big fat pout.

The sandstone puller grinned, congratulating Koma when the other male came away with a proper item and not one of the imps. His advice clearly helped, and others were leaning in to try to see what they did to try to beat the game themselves.

The reo running the booth seemed disappointed, these sorts of games were meant for people to lose after all. It was supposed to be more a game of chance, less of an evaluation of skill, and the fact two out of three of them succeeded was likely a small thorn in his paw.

Ember though was still puzzled, and Iniko bent low to see from the chaser’s perspective. “Alright, what ones are you thinking of?” He asked, and the chaser pointed to three, one with her muzzle, one with her paw, and another with one of her tails. Iniko glanced over the items. A goblet, the necklace she had been staring at earlier, and a small pile of feathers.

“Surely they can’t copy an entire pile of items?” She asked him, and Iniko used it as another teaching point. “All the feathers are touching, so theoretically they could be the same imp, or a few imps playing pretend.”

“Oh no, now it’s harder!” The little chaser cried but the puller wasn’t going to let her fail this.

“The goblet shines, but the jewels look fake, so maybe not that one. The feathers are hard to tell, there is no wind to see if they behave how they should. But that necklace…” The necklace was gorgeous, and it accented both Koma’s sparkles and Ember’s swirling hides. It would look amazing on either. And it behaved like it should, the shine and sparkle and the correct dazzling movement of the light.

Ember had no hesitation as she snatched up the necklace, taking the hints Iniko had dropped. She did her normal little dance they were getting used to as her sign of excitement, and showed the necklace to Koma.

 “See, I did it!” The game host seemed disappointed, and sighed as he took back their items and handed them their rewards. Iniko shared a smile with Koma. Together, they were a great team for these things.

END.
